hi my pyreaneanmoubtain dog x gs is currently in hospital it started with sickness then progressed to not eating we took him to vets who thought was a blockage or poss tumor so did scans xrays etc then ended up doing surgery to see what was going on good news no tumor but couldn't find anything else so took biopsy which came back as mild inflamatory bowel disease... sent him home he contiued not eating so went back again finally ended up having more surgery as had peritonitus due to loose stich.. 3 days on he is still not eating vets think he really should be eating by now ( and the ibd is not enough to cause all his symptoms) but he just refuses the next step is tube in stomach but reluctant as this would mean more general anisetic which would mean 3 ops in a week he is 10!! we also have gone way over the insurance limit of £2500 any advice or experiences of similar would be greatly recived as don't want to put him through much more if outlook not good.. but vets won't give an opinion and are a bit baffled i think

thanks in advance

Sorry to hear that...sounds horrid for your doggi....how long has he been like this and how old is he?
Have your vets discussed and dietry change and how best to manage his condition?

hi yes diet has been changed though wont eat anything so not the issue i have just spoke to vet again who said he has frozen the bill but will carry on treating him (think because the stich came loose which caused infection) he thinks we should give him a bit more time before making any decisions though it wasnt the money it is how much more do we put him through espec at 10yrs old if it's not working.... sorry for rabling just at a loss of what to do as i have had him since he was 7 weeks old and don't want to lose him x

I would agree with your vet....a little more time may help...esp as he is going to be sore, and would have been experiencing cramps upon eating..it may take him a little while to get started again...how is he in himself?
He is a good age for his breed...have a good read up on the condition...it will give you a better insight and possible future outcome/management, it is manageable dependant upon sevrity but can suffer frequent flair up's.....u are the best person to judge his discomfort and well being.

My lab suffers from a very sensitive tummy and a lot of feeds give him bad stomach pains. Although we know of two feeds that are good for him he is very fussy so we keep having to try new ones. After a 'bad' experience we find it very hard to get him to eat for several days afterwards. The last time after he ate some beef he eventually had to be taken to the vets to go on a drip. We've discovered that if we find something he's allergic to then for the next days afterwards he has cooked fresh vegetables and natral yoghurt which settles his tummy and doesn't hurt him.

It's possible ur doggy knows that eating will hurt his tummy and it's stopping him from eating.

yeah thanks, good news he is now coming home as finally eaten i think it was prolonged because of the peritonitus which made the whole thing worse even the vet was a bit baffled the other day! thanks for responses though
