Long term bute or natural alternative?

My horse it seems is going to need to be on some sort of permanent pain relief from now on. He is not in serious pain but mild discomfort across uneven ground. He is out of work and will be kept as a field ornament for as long as he is happy to be one.

My questions are... bute... how much can I give a day over long periods/indefinitely? He has only ever been on it for short bursts and I worry about long term side affects.

What are the best natural alternatives? Devils Claw? Something else? Stuff like Dodsons& Horrell Devils Claw - is it strong enough to have a pain relief effect or is it too mild?

Any advice would be great.

Thank you

If you read up, there doesn't seem to be much difference between the side effects of bute or devils claw, so you might be better sticking to bute.

If its for joint pain, a supplement might help? I've seen a definate improvement after starting on pernamax and MSM, and have been able to drop the bute down to 1 sachet every 3 days.

My horse is on 1/2 sachet of danilon a day and has been on this for a year already and will most likely always need it!
As he is only twelve I worry long term, my vet said this small amount is the equivalent of a person taking one aspirin a day, so not to worry!

My 32 year old retired pony is on bute prescribed by the vet just over a year ago, but I only give it to him during the winter....December through to the end of March whilst its particularly cold and wet, outside these months I give him Vet Vits Equiflex and I find this routine works well but each individual horse is different but I dont like the idea of giving bute on a long term regular basis.
