Long time lurker with some numpty questions!

Hello! I have been lurking on HHO for ages and have only just decided to make an account... I'll start with some numpty questions!:D

I'm hoping to take my rising 6 year old out to some shows this season. I am very excited but have never done any showing before! Have no idea what's correct to wear, correct for horse to wear, what classes to enter, what to do in the individual show... anything!

Please send your wisdom this way! :D
 
Hi, im no expert but think people may be able to give a better answer if you tell us what type/ breed of horse you have, and weather you want to show under saddle or in hand

He's a 16.1 TBXID, not very chunky, but no TB! Bay with one white sock and white blaze. Very hunter looking - So I presume ridden hunter would be fine?

Looking to do ridden classes and possibly some working hunter.
 
He could be a hunter type or a riding horse type. It's hard to know without seeing him but if you think he's a hunter type lets go from there :)

Hunters wear completely plain bridles with a flat noseband and browband. Preferably dark brown. Ideally a double bridle (or pelham with double reins) but at local level snaffle would be totally acceptable. You wear tweed, beige breeches, a shirt and tie. For hunter classes I would stay reasonably understated with your shirt and tie so no diamonte etc!

If you are showing in a flat class your individual most have a good gallop if you've got a hunter on your hands. My show used to go like this (but I am no guru so other people probably do totally different)

Ride out of line up, turn left (but you can pick which ever way you want!) trot away from the judge to the end of ring, track right and trot the long side of the ring in front of the judge. At the corner pop up into canter and canter half a 20m circle in front of the line up. I did a simple change across the middle and popped up into canter on the other rein, then I'd canter behind the line up, do my gallop down that long side and pull up back to canter for the corner. I'd canter back round to the other side of the ring, come back to trot and then halt opposite the line up. Salute and walk back to my place in the line up. It's easier to explain with a diagram though!

Does anyone know if a certain colour of tweed preferred? And are brown boots/gaiters a bit frowned upon? :o
 
I'd go for a green based tweed personally, I have a subtle thin red line through the check, so wear a red tie and a cream shirt.

Brown boots/gaiters fine at local level, black is more traditional but there are people who wear brown right the way up the levels.
