have a horse on the yard (he is retired and lives in the field) was found with a nail in his foot down the side of his frog and in about half a centimetre

anyway this was 23rd July (2 weeks and 4 days ago)

Polticed his foot and gunk came out till the wednesday then nothing for 2 days and still very lame so took him to the vets on Friday 29th July where the nerve blocked and x-rayed his foot - Found nothing

Came home and was told to keep polticing nothing came out for 2 days but since then it has been disgusting for 10 days and still very lame - this differs between being ale to walk and not putting his foot down !!

vets suggest next an MRI (he is not insured for this)

so has anyone else politiced a foot for nearly 2 1/2 weeks or longer??? what was the outcome

Is there any possibility that the bone was damaged by the nail - if so the increased pus could be coming from an infected bone - this usually increases when a normal puncture wound reduces.

I've polticed for about three weeks before but that was because one of the staff took the poultice off my mare and then led her over to the farrier and being a gravel yard forced moer dirt into the lovely clean hole! It re infected.

im not 100% sure but im say 95% sure that the nail was no further in than 1/2 a cm!!

We have had xrays etc and found nothing x

I had to poultice for 14 days to clear an abscess my TB had. I was getting worried as it seemed to be taking so long to clear, and I got xrays of the foot ( he had really bad seedy toe, long story ). My vet did tell me that if there was infection from the bone, then they get sick in themselves.

It took 2 weeks of poulticing to clear, but this was the last of repeated abscess's, 5 in total. I would poultice, then it would seem to clear, so he'd have the cast and shoe back on ( he was wearing a fibrecast on the foot at the time ), then 2 1/2 wks later he'd have another abscess.
I'm convinced it was the same abscess that wasn't clearing fully each time.

Can you give the vet a ring or your farrier and see if they are worried its taking so long to clear?
Kx

I poulticed my tb for 3 weeks for a very deep and nasty abcsess. He first went lame in the May with no obvious reason. He was on and off lame throughout May and June and then at the beginning of July he was hopping lame and resulted in a hospital visit to the vets. A nerve block in the area of the fetlock, he became instantly sound and an abscess was found. It took 3 weeks for all of the pus to drain out. A very frustrating experience in getting to the diagnosis of the abcsess and then waiting for it to drain out.

ok well we are on 2 1/2 weeks and have had him nerve blocked and xrayed after a week finding nothing !!

I guess it is just a waiting game and we are thinking its good news if we still have a lot of puss (i mean loads !!!)

Just over 3 weeks. Pus came out of the inside edge of the hoof at first and we thought when that stopped it had finished. But he was still lame and so we continued. What we didn't know was that it had underrun the sole and eventually it burst out of the heel bulb. Masses of pus so no wonder the poor lad was hopping :(

phew i guess we keep going for another week then x

I poulticed my mare on near hind for 4 weeks, infection came up through the foot and out at top of heel and then 2 weeks into that she had same thing happen on the near fore! In all 8 weeks with both BUT she is also on Danilon for her Arthritis and I reckon this slowed the healing. My vet also said some horses do take longer to get over abcess's than others so yeah - stick with it it will come to an end!!
