Does longreining benefit a horse that is already established in its work?
I want to start longreining BBB as it will be a good way for me to loose weight (power walking) and will give me some incentive to actually do it. But would it actually benefit her?
I've only longreined youngsters and driving horses.

I long rein every new year to get HRH fit before I sit on her -also helps me lose the Christmas excess! I go out on hacks and walnut/run work her. We do simple moves like lengthening and shortening pace and lateral work. By the end she is doing figures of 8 in Cadney with a simple change or the odd flying change. I feel it benefits jet to gain strength before I sit on her and I also like to see her from the ground.i do it occasionally mid season too - I think it's a nice way to get them stretching the day after a comp etc

I quite enjoyed having to translate that :)

I think long-reining's beneficial if you do groundwork / polework etc as the horse is able to use its back in a different way without a rider on. You get better forward movement from long reining than from leading in hand...
