I have recently started to longrein inky in preparation for breaking him to drive. He is still a baby at 5 and this is the first time he has also been bitted. He has taken to it like a duck to water and nothing seems to faze him. The only problem i have at the moment is getting him to stand still. I often have to do this on my own as ive no help and appreciate it would be easier with someone helping but is there any tips anyone can give me to make him stand still by myself??

My welshie was (and still is) very impatient and hates standing still.

What I did on the long lines was, I asked her to stand still, literally for a second, and then asked her to move on again before she started to fidget. I gradually increased the time I asked her to stand, just a little bit each time, and tried to time it so I asked her to move on BEFORE she got impatient.

I totally agree. I would ask her to stand still when she does reward with praise if you do have someone to help ask them to hold her whilst you re inforce the command. Increase the length of time your asking her to stand for and she should get used to it. The only other thing I have tried was when long reining work them without asking them to stand still for about half an hour so they are tired as youngsters tire quicker and then start asking them to stand and change the spots you ask dont ask by the gate for example. When leaving the school or whereever you are working ask him/her to stand.

Sorry if this is rambling and incoherent but i hope its of some help. Its hard to type answers I always find it better to show people maybe we should start a 'how to' video section on the forum!! good luck

I would agree with the other posters get somebody to lead him and make him stand when asked, reward with treat/clicker which ever your choice really as some people dont like to feed treats. But can you tell me where you got your harness as I have a mini shettie 8hh and I am finding impossible to get a harness to fit him and dont really want to buy one made to measure for him.
