look at this link these dogs will be put to sleep if no homes found

Poor pooches, makes me so sad how people can just dump their dogs

I really love Sasha and Winston, if I could I'd definitely take at least one
frown.gif

I really do hope they all find the loving home that they all deserve.

I know.... there are far too many dogs in this world.... most of them are staffy X or similar.......

I cant have any more am already full up but at least by advertising the site it may help....

There are far too many dogs in this world that nobody wants. They shouldn't be bred in the first place IMO. If most of them are staffy x, then what are the staffy breed societies doing about it?

If nobody wants them, then what else is there to be done than have them pts? It's harsh, but the only solution - they cost money to keep - who should pay?

I agree with you regarding the breeding... Unfortunately anyone can breed dogs and the prices some of them charge - they just dont care... its an easy way to make money....

But it is not the dogs fault at the end of the day and yes they do cost money to keep but at least we (the nice people) can help to rehome them cos there is always someone wanting a nice doggie...

It is a sad fact of life that so many animals are PTS just because they no longer have a home.... its a hard reality but true!..

Skinnydogs.... is there any other way we can help other than advertising their site?

Well the perfect home for a certain dog may not have turned up yet - why euthanise a dog on Monday when their dream home could come up the following Monday, or the following month or even year? That small chance of happiness is worth keeping a healthy dog alive for. And that is the basis Im sure most rescues run themselves on.

In an ideal world............ Most rescues will not pts, but the sad fact is that there are finite places in rescues, and not every dog in a council pound can be taken in by a rescue once its time is up

The answer surely is to stop creating a market for breeding dogs by not buying them? There are so many dogs in rescue I often wonder why people go to a breeder to buy one?

I'm not a lover of staffs but I'm seriously considering getting one from our local rescue cos the poor little beggers can stay there for years. Unfortunatly the people that keep churning out then abandoning these dogs are not true dog lovers so won't be reading this when I say you're all a bloody disgrace

Stella was/is my first dog, and so I wanted a known quantity. I had certain breeds in mind, breeds suitable for city living, and while a number of excellent no-kill rescues have since become established in the city, the choice when I first got here was limited, with 80/90% of dogs at the city shelter being Pits or Shepherd mixes or very elderly toy poodles.

Now, if CALA lived in my vicinity, things might have been different
grin.gif

Fact is, though, people will always want pedigree pups. Five years on, I'm still in touch with the breeder I got Stella from, and back to the breeder she would go if I couldn't keep her (the breeder also had me sign a "compulsory spay" form; break it, and future pups could not be registered with the AKC). So, there are good breeders. The crackdown, in my eyes, needs to start with BYBs (those that sell in newspapers etc.), puppy mills, and those idiots that flog out Staffie pups at a dime a dozen.

Sounds like the breeder you got Stella from is excellent
smile.gif
. You are so right about the BYBs, puppy farms, etc. Are you familiar with Many Tears www.manytears.co.uk ? Maybe not as you are in the States. They take so many dogs that have been used as breeding machines, and then not wanted as they became no longer of economic benefit. Many Tears also take failed farm dogs. Sadly some farmers would otherwise shoot them, or turn them out on the mountains

Oh wow!!! Last chance is where I got 2 of my rescued dogs from....

Will put that site on my favourites.... a definate worthwhile cause...

Sadly there are still too many dogs out there looking for a good home.......

Something needs to change about the way dogs are bred......

Yes, I've heard of them (I'm an ex-pat). Great organisation.

We have a fantastic no-kill rescue that opened around the corner from us last year. In an attempt to compete with the pet shops that still sell puppies
mad.gif
they opened a slick store/shelter last year that aims to undo the conventional image most people have of shelters. There are no concrete runs or horrid smells, and it looks much like any other fancy pet store in Manhattan.

They have top trainers on staff and I would adopt from them in a heartbeat. Seriously, I have been keeping a beady eye on Candi all week. How cute is she?!

Animal Haven Shelter

(KC daughter...)did anyone see that ITV news thing on london chavs having dogs protecting them?!?!? it makes me sick that they breed dogs, mainly staffies for protection.one guy said "they fight untill they die" or something along those lines. these dogs need loving homes...as cesar millian says.."no bad breed , just bad owners! " i believe this to the full.

It's a sad fact of life...but it has to be done...not all rescues/kennels have the capacity to take the sheer numbers of stray dogs presented everyday...everyone will have a cut off

PROSE....she is a cuties....and Spazmo

Hilarious, isn't it? They generally rename the dogs when they come into rescue, so someone evidently learnt about Spazmo's personality very quickly.

Before Christmas, they had three long-haired chihuahua pups and three Westie pups for adoption. How the hell I went to the place twice a week (it's where Stella has playdates, agility classes etc.) and came away empty-handed, I'll never know.

How are the latest recruits doing at Castle Cala?

Lol...Im taking Harvey...stout body building staffi with the pout
grin.gif
...to visit a prospective family with a staffi for a new brother
grin.gif
they saw his picci and liked the look of him.

they even had theirs neutered...cos the receptionist in the vets "who knows me

) said there is not a chance they would get Harvey with theirs still entire
tongue.gif

We are having a new advertising campaign and new website made up...so lot more homes soon hopefully

Next rescue in...will be named Spazmo

Well of course, I understand that perhaps more than you realise.

I bought my two puppies from a breeder. Would you like to ask me why? I would be more than happy to tell you!

You're right, of course, I don't realise
smile.gif
(and still don't!). And yes, I am interested in why people buy dogs from breeders! Perhaps I should explain my interest in that until recently I was a foster carer for a rescue. Unfortunately I had to go back to work
frown.gif
to pay the mortgage, but will certainly foster again as soon as I can.

It's not necessarily a criticism from me about buying from breeders, although I guess I'm aiming more at the BYBs than anything else. I can understand that people want a dog that fits their lifestyle, and so a particular breed may have the temperament / size for that, but with so many in rescue and council pounds (of all shapes, sizes and ages) I find it hard to come to terms with. Undoubtedly I am biased from my experience with fostering, but I have long been curious about why people buy from breeders.

Thank you
smile.gif

Totally understand where u are coming from..I Myself will never buy a dog from a breeder...this is due to what I have experienced and deal with on a daily basis...however I do understand why some people choose to go to a breeder.

I have been turned down by every rescue I have ever asked to rehome from.
On the basis that because I live in a flat and dont have a garden I cannot give a dog a good home! And so the dogs stay in their 6x12 kennels with two walks a day, whilst I go out, buy two jack-russell-terriers who are the most cossetted, spolit loved little buggers around!

I'm sorry that you had that experience with rescue. Unfortunately (in my opinion) some rescues stick absolutely rigidly to their rules, and do not look on each case on its merits. Apart from no garden, the other rules often rigidly stuck to is if you are working (regardless of how many hours or even if you work from home!), and if you have children under a certain age (usually 5). Fortunately many of the smaller rescues are not so rigid. I know that English Springer Spaniel Welfare rehomed a Springer to someone in a flat with no garden, but then they were at their yard all day
smile.gif

Smaller rescues also seem to be more foster home than kennel based too. Much better for the dog, and so much better to be able to assess temperament.
