BHS initiative offers HGV driving licence at a fraction of the usual cost

The British Horse Society has been working with Clearstone to allow women in the horse industry to obtain a HGV driving licence at just one third of the usual rate.

Women who fulfil the relevant criteria will be able to train for and take their HGV 'C' Driving Licence at a cost of £400 as opposed to the normal fee of approximately £1,200.

Candidates will need the following standard legal requirements to obtain a 'C' driving licence:

· Those applying must be over 21 years old,
· They must have held a driving licence for a minimum of three years,
· They must have a Provisional 'C' Licence (to apply for this a medical certificate is required),
· A Theory Test must be passed before starting to drive (this cost is included in the price).

Sheila Hardy, BHS Safety Senior Executive said: “This is an excellent opportunity for women working on yards who would love to be able to drive horseboxes but do not have the correct licence, nor the money to obtain one.”

The funding is restricted to women living in the East Midlands, West Midlands, London and the Home Counties. The offer is time sensitive and commitment is required by August 2007 with the course being undertaken by March 2008.

well I just phoned and have been given the go ahead and I live in Devon - tried the BHS they stated no way so I rang clearstone to ask why they were being countyist......... They said goal posts were changing and I could do it if I meet their criteria and am ok about travelling up to West Oxfordshire for my test. Not a problem if it saves me £800

Did you get your provisional through DVLA I have just been on their website and cant find what I am looking for, I have a full driving licence but passed in July 97

Thanks

I just emailed, then gave them my home address and they said I do not live in the areas designated for funding. I checked on the government website and Sleaford is definitely East Midlands, so asked if the areas eligible were more specific. No reply as yet....

don't bother emailing - ring and if the BHS can't give you the ok then pm me and I will give you the funding companies phone number and they will send you the pack directly. I think they will say that sleaford is actually east Anglia not the east midlands, that they are classifying as Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and leicestershire.
