When my TB was patiently waiting to be shod, happily wearing his Fly Rug, with a tarpaulin flapping around next to him ..... suddenly he started leaping around, kicking out and being very fretful .... and for a horse that normally stands there asleep for the Farrier (runs and hides by mentioning that word

A [****] fly (horse fly

) had found its way under his rug

We then tied him up in his stable, where the Farrier (

) pointed out two small little lumps on his quarters ...... TB was in ecstasy if I scratched them ......

However poor boy did not settle to be shod, as he kept trying to bite his side and flicking his tail and was a very angry boy .... he is normally Mr Dopey personified around the stables

Well a couple of hours later .... look what appeared ....... you can just see the initial two little bites that the Farrier (
shocked.gif
) noticed ....

I covered it in Aloe Vera Cooling Gel, that a very kind girl gave me

and he just stood there with his head on the ground, say Aaaaaaah ....

you think thats bad look at this one... i should point out my horse if bitten suffers severe reactions that have been known to need steroid injections and its not a normal reaction.

This one of her smaller ones too- if your horse suffers with them get some deosect by deosan its miracle stuff!!!!

it then takea a few days to sink and disperse

Oh no ..... poor girl ..... do you put anything on them, or does she always have to have a Steroid injection
crazy.gif

.... and does she wear a Fly Rug and if so, which one?

looks a bit like my leg - bastard horseflies bit me through my jods on my ride yesterday - twice - massive, red, itchy swellings despite piriton and athisan cream. hate them!

She has had to have sterroids into them twice but this one and ones that arent in tack areas just getwashed in dettol twice a day at least to take the sting out and cold hosed before to take the heat out ( luckily my girlie love bathies time! ).

She doesnt wear a fly rug at all as i have found deosect by deosan which does a fabby job of keeping the flies away.

She does still get the odd bite but these big ones are fewer now she has deocect on.

I have one of these big bites on the top of my arm and for human cortisone cream work wonders on taking the sting and heat out!.

Have a big bottle of dettol and a hosepipe and you should find it goes down in a few days IF your horse isnt a scratcher. If they scrath them they can get infected.

Our poor babies it musr be a tb thing!

actually my old horse had similar to yours - fly got under his fly rug and caused a huge reaction. his skin all sloughed off and hair grew back white right by his hip - really obvious and horrid. luckily it went away when he moulted his coat.

PS - your horse in your signature really reminds me of my new orange one

oooweee! Is that Motor?

I react badly, but ponio seems to be fine. Aloe Vera should help. Gosh, bet the scratching felt sooooo good!

Oh no it was my TB ...... if it was Motor I would have been in a bigger stew
shocked.gif
..... it has got worse those since, poor chap

My TB today has a lump as big as a platter, with a tear coming out of it
shocked.gif
.... he is so uncomfortable, so I have washed it with a saline and Dettol solution and now see that his sheath has little bumps all over that

Dont worry about it getting bigger.

The bite in that pic took 36 hours to go from a 50p sized coin to that.

I bet you its gone in 2-3 days and just levaes a small head - try to avoid knocking it off also dont scratch it...its the worst thing you can do for bites.

Keep is cool and have the heat out and that will remove the sting.

Im nursing a wrist like a tree trunk today as i got bitten out riding last night thats gotten bigger today.

Flys are evil nasty little critters.

sorry to go completely off topic but......eaglestone is that flecking through your boys coat? and if it is how old is he?(my yearling is the same colour currently)
