I frequently have friends dogs to stay when they are on holiday and they just live in my house. I have two dogs of my own and they get on with everything - I have just been approached by a neighbour to see if I will take their dog on a regular basis when they are away. I have no problem with the dog - he is brilliantly well behaved and has amazing recall and very friendly - however, I want to charge them and they want to pay me. So what would you think was a reasonable daily rate for a dog to live in my home as one of mine, with 35 acres of ground to roam around in securely. I would expect the owner to provide the food.

I was thinking about £10 a day and they must have their jabs.

Also what insurance would I need - I would insist all dogs are insured for vet and public liability - I have public liability here as I have a livery yard and am insured with NFU and I know I can add the dogs to that. But am not sure what else I need to look for.

Also - sorry its getting long now - would you be interested in leaving your dog in a home environment rather than kennels?

A friend of my mums does this, but will only have CKCS (her breed) to stay - she charges £5 a day I think, but they bring their own food.

£10 a day is quite steep IMHO - I have just put my two in a lovely kennels, it was £8.75 per day for one dog and £10.75 per day for 2 sharing (including VAT). Granted that is not your own home however!

And yes, I would prefer my dogs to live in someone's house if possible when i went away

the reason I came up with £10 a day is that kennels round here charge £12.95 a day and that is in a kennel and run. 3 years ago I had to put my dog in kennels for 2 weeks and I looked everywhere for a place where he could stay in someone's house. I paid £13.50 per day for that and had to take his own bed and food. They were an established business so I thought £10 as a start up would be about right.
 
I normally charge £10 up to meduim sized dogs in my house (the house is small and i can't really accomodate larger dogs or more than 2 medium dogs unless it's only for one or two nights), they also bring their own food/bed/toys. I take them for 2 short walks round the park (first thing and last thing) and one off lead run about on the common and this is with my own dog. He/she must be vaccincated and given a Vet number in case of emergency (if they are close to me or use my own vet as visitor), insured aswell.

I would rather my dog to be placed at people's homes aslong they get on well and gives adqueate exercise as my dog is a lively jack russel... so whereabouts are you bosworth... perhaps u can have mine when i am on hols????

Seven Oceans Do you have any special insurance for the dogs - so you are covered if they cause damage etc while in your care and you are welcome to bring your dogs over - shame its a long way. We have a large farmhouse with a huge kitchen and double aga so dog size is not really a problem.
 
I have a friend who house sits. She charges £10.50 per day extra if there is a dog to walk, feed and brush. If there are more than one dog or other pets she gives a discount.

Gosh and I thought my kennels were expensive! Well in that case £10 a day sounds a really good deal, I would go for that amount

I have my own home boarding business I charge £15 for med/large breed per night and £10 for small breed per night...and im fully booked till the end of the year....I have people inundating me with bookings...as they are desperate to have their dogs stay in home environment...I have full liability insurance to cover accident/injury to the public, also vets fees, travelling fees and walking...incase anything happens when on walks or in transit as I collect alot of my dogs, Im with Cliverton insurance, they offer fab cover, Im also licenced with the local authority.

I have 2 small dogs in at the moment for 6 weeks and one due in for 5 weeks next month...so my prices don't seem to be putting people off, quiet the opposite really.
I walk them with my dogs and allow them free run/play time in my horses field which is fully escape proof.

I also have a cattery...currently full

Im cheap in my area...I have clients that have been paying £20-25 per night

thanks for that I will probably take you up on your offer. I seem to have loads of friends who's dogs just love staying here so I might as well make some money out of it as well. I will speak to NFU and see if I can extend my insurance with them. Just doing it informally at the moment - but will look into setting up in an official capacity - I bet I can just extend my remit from horse livery to horse and dog livery.

My dogs have just met 'archie' the mad as a hatter springer and decided ganging up was the only solution - archie lay down. what a disappointment that was to two hairy lurchers

Gosh--these are all bargain prices compared to boarding in NYC. The bogstandard doggie daycare facilities charge upwards of $55 a night, and the lady I board Stella with is $65 a night (but she is a trainer, and all of her attentions are focussed on exercising and playing with the dogs).

10 quid a day? I would snap your hand off!
