I can't ride until about 5.30 to 6 in the week and then I ride for half to three quarters of an hour schooling, by which time me boy is very sweaty. I then have a dillema about how to rug him - I leave him in if he is very we and this evening I put a fleece cooler on and eventually a stable rug over the top when he was cool but still wet. Am now worrying about whether he is dry or still damp. How to other people deal with this? I can't ride earlier, he was clipped a few weeks ago, although it is growing back and he does naturally sweat up easily.
Thanks for any tips

I'd probably clip him again if he is getting that sweaty and shorten schooling time slightly, and extend cooling off period... not much help really

He has got a medical condition that results in him sweating up so sadly I need to cope with the sweating

Do you have a Thermatex or Thermalux rug, that would help a lot? You can put it on when you have finished and horse will dry off much quicker with one of those as it takes moisture off the back to lay on top of the rug, much better than a normal fleece. If he has that condition then it would be worth more than the weight in gold to you; well worth the expense and you can pick them up on ebay for a fraction if you don't want to buy new.

Thanks

Will it be OK to add a stable rug on top of one - I don't want to be hanging around until really late waiting for him to dry if possible (kids and OH and work think I'm hanging around slacking)

TBH, they are so warm, he won't need another rug on top and if you did put one on top it would stop the airflow which is the main thing that gets them dry so quickly so it would defeat the object of the exercise! As long as you don't mind it being covered in bedding in the morning, he should be perfectly dry and warm left in it overnight. He'd also dry off quicker if you were to put either stable bandages or wraps on him too. Thermatex do leg wraps which are brilliant for wet muddy legs, dry and warm in no time..............I can feel a shopping trip coming on!

I have a thermatex rug for Fly, it was expensive, £110, but it is brilliant and is a MUST have in his wardrobe! I do whinge a bit when I find it covered in shavings in the morning but it does exactly what it is supposed to and I can go home and not worry that he will chill. I only use it when he is sweaty and tend to save it for travelling and shows etc.

I don't suppose your yard has any infra-red/heat lamps you could stick him under for a few minutes to dry off? I don't know how much they are to buy, wonder if it would be worth investigating if this is a problem you have a lot.
Second the Thermatex recommendation. Another old-fashioned tip is to put straw underneath a lightweight rug or sweat rug, allows the air to circulate. We used to do it before they invented wicking!

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions - I will look into the thermatex although I suspect that before christmas spending its out of the question.
