Please tell me all about general puppy care, how your dog slots into your life? I have a cat who is 7 and my furry baby so any dog will need to leave/get on with him. My current breed of choice is a papillon, has anyone got one? I'm interested as they are a small breed, don't need mountains of exercise and a lapdog appeals! I know they are very small so would need to be handled with care! I would love to hear all about your dogs :D
 
They are small but active.
They probably need as much exercise as a whippet so don't be fooled by them being in the toy group. They are trainable and can be cuddly lap dogs but do need mental stimulation.
Try the breed clubs and breed rescues for honest information.

We have a Bichon, who also doesn't need 'mountains' of exercise. But, she's an active little dog also who loves her walks. She's just been out with me for two hours, and will have another hour tonight.....
 
They are also very expensive to buy! As for having a puppy, it's pretty much a full time job when you first get it so you might want to think about time off work for the first bit?

A friend had 2. They were big characters, active but always a little heart in mouth when they were at the yard as so small. Is there a breed it welfare club so you can find out more to see if they are the right dog for you? My 3 staffords are proper Staffie size so small compared to what people think they should be, being terriers they need a lot of exercise so don't get sucked into smaller = less walk time!
 
We'd try and get the dog out for a good walk every day, 40 minutes with off lead running in our very large garden! We had been looking at a retriever but decided our house and life just isn't suited to a working breed. We've bought a kennel club book on them and they do sound like what we would like as I love animals with character- my welsh a is a feisty so and so, but also would like something small and transportable to cuddle.

Just be careful of the fragile bit..they literally only weight 6 lbs and a bit!
 
Yeah, luckily we have no other dogs or small children to play rough but making sure it doesnt jump off high surfaces and is handled carefully is essential I'd imagine with a small dog. We'd love to take it to the yard, but on lead or inside the yards communal barn at all times.
 
I had a tiny papillion bitch, less then 6lbs. She was very lazy and not fussed about walking any where. Found basic obedience and house training a bit tricky but a cat flap solved the problem.
