Hi, I am looking for a second hand chassis cab for a horse lorry and would appreciate some advice, my budget approx £2000/£2500, I'm looking for a DAF 45/150 ideally.

Firstly, could someone give me some advice on what year I could purchase for my budget.

Does anyone know of a good source in Northern Ireland for chassis? i would be prepared to go down south if necessary but the nearer to Belfast the better.

Also would anyone know of any online sources beyond auto trader to check prices etc?

Finally, It's been suggested that i get a 10 ton chassis and downgrade it to 7.5 tons as it will give me a more robust lorry, better brakes etc. If anyone has any experience of this could you tell me if i need an HGV license for a downrated chassis and if it's worth the work, should i just stick with a 7.5 ton lorry instead?

Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

I would just get a 7.5 ton, a downrated one will have stronger springs and axles but the downside is it will be heavier so you lose payload
as for year you should get a tidy one of the last ones made would be 2001 if you are thinking of
replacing an old chassis you need to get the right wheel base so it will fit, and check the cab hight too... you could look on ebay or in truck trader you might have to get one with a body and take it of but people will buy a box or curtain sider of you for storage hope this helps....

I do not know where you live, but i can refer you to a very good, very honest mechanic who I am sure will help you. He has horses, his daughter show jumps (for fun) the only regret I have, is that we did not know of him years ago, he could have saved my trucker husband thousands and lots of heartache......no he is not a relative, but we consider him now to be a very good friend, my jeep is with him at the moment being prepared for the dreaded MOT. If you PM me I will give you his mobile number and his address. He really will, either help you source a reliable Daf, or will suggest someone who can. Good Luck, it is a minefield of dodgy trucks out there!! PS he lives not far from Doagh, Co Antrim.
