I have been looking for a horse on loan (with a view to buy depending in circumstances) now since January...! Life time home offered!!

I am a competant rider with my own horse, I would like something bigger (Lady is 14.3hh) that myself and my partner (6ft) can ride.

I'm not looking for a god send, something forward going, safe on the road, general manners on the ground and some schooling.

We have a place available on a private yard, no children or novices, horse walker, large stables, plenty of grazing, winter turnout and a full time employed stable hand. The yard is in Northumberland and I will consider traveling for the right horse. We would prefere a thoroughbred/warmblood type but anything would be considered. I don't mind a horse with slight injuries/ailments and age doesn't concern us.

I have exhausted the internet, papers and riding schools. If there are any smaller rehoming centres that are not nationally advertised can you let me know? I have tried most of the ex-racers sites, WHW, etc. If anyone can help, please get in touch. I know the old cliche 'the right one will eventually come along' but it has been 6 months now and we are needing to progress forward.

Have you put up any adverts locally? I have always found loan horses through my adverts and word of mouth, normally from people that were thinking of advertising to loan/sell their horse but hadn't got round to it yet until they came across my advert.

Most loan horses will be advertised to stay on the owners yard, due to the amount of horror stories you hear now. I have been lucky with my loan horses as I knew all the owners and they trusted me to take the horse away to my yard. Hope you find a loan horse! I am currently looking to buy and it is a nightmare!!!

Gosh I was really lucky, when I was looking I put a wanted ad on Preloved and got a call the next day, but I guess that was just good timing!

If I was you I'd put wanted ads on every free site you can find and cards in every local tack shop and every local yard too.

Good luck :)

Word of mouth works wonders - farrier, vets, feed shops, saddleries etc. The fact that you are happy to take on a TB/WB and want something forward going and aren't put off by ailments, is definitely in your favour as a lot of people expect to find a bombproof, quiet, novice ride. Keep trawling all the internet sites and put adverts on all the free ones. It won't be long before people start to think of keeping their horses through the winter and there should be some more coming up for loan. There should also be some more as uni starts in September and quite a few people put their horses on loan while they are studying. Hope you find something - good luck

Hi Guys!

Thanks for your advice so far, have sent the other half round to tack shops, wholesalers etc to do some advertising!

And to one of the responses above about us wanting a tb/wb....my partner isn't afraid to fall off, he sees it more of a challenge to ride something frisky, I think he's an idiot but each to their own! :)
