Looking for a Lorry

Just started looking for a 7.5ton lorry to fit my large boy in - it needs to be big and safe, mechanically sound.

I've been looking at Ford Cargo's and Leyland Daf's - anyone got any opinions about these?

Where's the best place to start looking?
Thanks

We've had our DAF which I think is 1999/2000 for nearly 3 years now & (touch wood) it's been fab. Good starter (except when o/h forgets its isolator) & reliable (touch wood).

We had it built by a firm nearby, so that's not much help!

I've got a 1991 DAF, you can't have it tho because I love it!
Had it 4 years, flys through its plating, apart from diesel, tax insurance etc never spent anything else on it.; mechanically great, very easy to drive

We've had a Ford Cargo (think 0811) for about 8 or 9 years, it's an old B reg but has been fantastic. Could do with a bit of a respray now like but has been fab!

Am on my 5th lorry. Currently have a Mercedes 811. Previously have had another Merc and Ford Iveco 813 and a transit. You'll find lots of Cargos around and they will be cheaper than most other makes. This is because there are more of them and they are easy to drive! Main fault as told already is rust and chassis problems. Mercedes meanwhile have gear boxes which can be tricky and the suspension can be light which can give such a smooth drive that some horses don't like it. My advice is, find a good mechanic who can give your chosen lorry the once over before you buy. If they can't see it take pics of the chasis and areas you are worried about before you buy to show them for advice instead. Decide exactly what you want in terms of horse and living areas (size, fittings, etc). Check the floor- lift any rubber matting and look at the copy of the last MOT/plating to check for mileage and warnings. Don't get blinded by a glitzy living area if the body is about to fall to pieces! Don't get worried about too high a mileage. Lorries deteriorate quicker if they aren't driven regularly so find out how far and regularly its used
Ask questions before you visit and request extra pictures to prevent lots of wasted journeys. Good luck.

I'd go for a DAF every time.
I had a Ford Cargo which did me well, but the cabs rot and parts are hard to find now.
I then tried an Iveco and a Daf and the Daf was so much nicer to drive, like a car, just my own opinion but the Iveco gear box was very stiff, at least the one I tried was.
