Looking for a new bit for my Welsh gelding. I hate his Wilkie.

Ok, so the gelding I'm loaning is in a Wilkie snaffle currently, single jointed and I despise riding him in it.
I do have brakes, but when he bolts and I ask him to stop, it immediately pulls his head in and I just get a broncing session.

So, I'm looking to put him in a new bit. He's in the Wilkie currently because his owner likes him to look all show pony like, and it makes him pull his head in. But of course, there's no connection over the back, and the Wilkie doesn't help me when I'm asking for it.

I will need something with good braking, but I don't want something that will have the Wilkie effect.

Does anyone think keeping a bit with poll pressure would help?

How about starting with a french link lozenge lose ring? Perhaps someone on your yard has one you could try, or you could try a bit bank. A fab bit for most tbh. You might find his running off, then bronking when you ask him to come back to you, is due to him being jabbed with his current single joint. If the horse is comfortable in its mouth you often find that there is no need to up the severity of the bit.
