Looking for a small plod of a pony.

I am helping a friend look for a pony for her granddaughter - which I have realised is easier said than done!

What we are looking for is a pony no bigger than 12 hh (could go a bit bigger for the right pony). Ideally something that has been there and done it all and is looking for the quiet life. Something that is in semi-retirement and is happy to have a waif of a 5yr old to sit on it. Willing to take on a long term loan or buy. Will have a home for life as there are several grandkids younger than the 5 year old. Will be on a very quiet yard with 5 horses and 3 minis. Menage which is currently being re-surfaced with a rubber mix (can't be more specific than that!). If on long term loan she is happy for a yard inspection etc etc and relevent contracts to be drawn up. It would be nice if it had tack but obviously not essential.

I thought this would be an easy call - what with all the out grown ponies out there but they seem to be like gold dust!

They are based in a small village on the outskirts of Nottingham.

Ponies like this are indeed like gold dust - a lot of these ponies will move on by word of mouth, so never come on the open market. I recently sold my son's hopelessly out grown shetland, who was an angel on 4 legs. When I advertised him I had over 30 phone calls and he was bought by a family that drove all the way from Surrey to view him - we are on the welsh borders!!

My only advice would be to check the Pony Club classifieds website. You could also phone the DC of your local pony club as they may know of something. Other than that, I would suggest trying a 'wanted' ad on a reputable online site such as Horsequest.

When the old boy we bought for my daughter was pts, on her birthday unfortunately. (colic) We were all heartbroken so I put a wanted ad on preloved describing the situation and what I was looking for. I got a phonecall that week offering us a pony. She is no pedigree prize winner but she is perfect for what we wanted. Always worth a try?
