Looking for advice.

I’ve been looking around for different types of head collars for my boy and decided to get help!
Recently he has became a sod and gotten really strong when leading, I think it’s down to restricted turn out as he was fine before this, but I can’t keep having him pull me around when he wants to go.
I’ve been looking at control headcollars, but I’m not sure if it’s the best way to go about it and if with a control head collar you’d also need a chain on the lead rope?
Just looking for advice but I will not use a chifney! Any help would be great.

I have a dually headcollar that I bought when I took a previous horse to a Monty Roberts Demo. I also was given an Eskadron headcollar that my best friend gave me and I use both. The dually is great for riding and lunging and long reining in and the Eskadron is useful for fraught leading.

If its very windy or the rain is pelting down heavily and I know Lari will be a PITA to lead in from the paddock then I make sure I take the Eskadron headcollar down with me. He is very respectful of it.

You will need to impress upon anyone that's gets your horse in (friends. family or staff) that the horse cannot be tied up on the nose clip with the dually or with the chain on the Eskadron if the horse needs to be tied up for leg washing/rug changing. Not everyone will know or think about this and if the horse pulls back all hell with break lose!

Thank you! I just need it for leading to the feild and back or on inhand walks with other horses as he gets too much. The pro safe Lemieux control looks similar, does it have the same affects as the eskadron?

Sorry I'm not familiar with the Lemieux so don't know I'm afraid.
You will do to get a second hand one off ebay or FB market place, as they can get quite expensive. You also need to ensure you get a blue dually if its a fairly big horse, the other colours come in smaller sizes.

I've only used the ones that have a headpiece on them but these are alot cheaper!

The LeMieux one is the same as the Eskadron. Some would say it's a copy, but others would say it is just a standard design ?
(I have had both over the years)

I find a carrot is generally more effective than a control headcoller.

I've found that Control headcollers in themselves aren't the solution but training, reinforced with the correct use of a dually or similar, results in an easier to lead horse. I made sure we practiced the training every single time we walked anywhere and that was the best long term solution.

A carrot was the most effective short term solution.

I'd try a plain rope headcollar first, then go with a control headcollar like Lemieux/any similar alternative if the rope fails.

Rope worked well for a strong gelding I used to lead and was far cheaper than the control ones. Don't use treats or let them graze in hand alongside the section you typically lead - in my experience they just get bolshy about food.

Yes, put the bridle on. With a bit of luck horse will realise the bad behaviour is not required and you can go back to a head collar soon enough.

I have a bit of 8mm string I use with a small clip on the end - run it through the nose clips of the headcollar and up the side to the throat lash clip. I use it for bad loaders, bad leaders etc

I do too, tho I use a rolled dog lead with clip on the end, does the job.

My mare has a Richard Maxwell pressure halter and is an angel in it! I can’t hold her in a normal headcollar and a dually didn’t work either.
