i guys i have a hairy nearly 10 month old cob. he started molting few weeks ago and isnt as hairy now my temps here are -12 today he seems ok in the cold untill it rains then he gets bit shivery so could i use a summer sheet or would this make him colder. failing that i will have to find lightweight i dont wont to spend loads as it will only be used for few weeks then nxt year he would of out grown it.

Try the amigo rainsheets or the weatherbeeta lite. Rhinegold have a combo one aswell.

Dont use the summer sheet, it's not waterproof!

Think you are right OP that the light weight will make him colder as he won't be able to fluff up, know Weatherbeeta do a med/lite one, think it has about 100g of fill in it. And lots of places have end of season sales at the moment...

Another recommendation for amigo rugs, they last forever and are really nice ,and as others have said you can always sell it on if you no longer need it as they're a brand people tend to go for.

This - he needs a rug with some fill or he will be colder. The Amigo Mio medium weight is about the best value economy rug which I am using on my unclipped pony in this cold weather.

there are some amigos on this page ,these are nice little rugs cheap as chips , but only a few sizes left unfortunately. and a good company to deal with

i agree with this! i got my amigo from them, they give fab service and are by far the cheapest seller of amigo! Plus i have actually seem them go second hand on ebay for more then they are sold for on here!

Agree like amigo, I had the light weight t/o version that was only shower proof.. I didnt realise this until there had been a down pour and my boy was soaked through (luckily it was summer and warm so the little precious horse was fine and did not died due to being wetted... :o) I combated the problem by sticking it through the washing machine with re-proofer.. never let a drop of moisture through since , and I didnt need to go and buy a new lightweight turnout.. yay.

If you buy an amigo or amigo mio rain sheet and you decide he isn't warm enough you could get a rambo or premier equine 100g liner to go with it. That way you have a rain sheet or a warmer rug so you can decide depending on the weather. Also as he grows you can get away with using the smaller liner inder the next size rug. I have found the neck holes stretch so still fit comfortably.

If you are anywhere near Essex or would pay for postage I have a 4'6 or 9 (can't remember, will look tomorrow) my foal wore last winterthat is pretty well brand new and did him fine. It is sort of pink though.

When mine was a youngster I used to use Cuddly Pony rugs. I'd pick them up on eBay (eg: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cuddly-Po...t=UK_Horse_Wear_Equipment&hash=item4162760e27). They were cut small enough to fit comfortably and went up to a 5'3" I think. If I had a small one left I'd have let you have it, but I gave mine away back along. Maybe someone on here will have one they can let you have. Fingers crossed :)

What size do you need?

this is complete guess as i had my old ponies rug on him other day just to get him use to me pulling things on and off him that was 4ft 9 and pretty small didnt cover bum so im thinking 5ft 6 will be good for him unfortunatly i cant get the tape measure near him lol.

thank you for your reply unfortunatly cuddly pony wouldnot fit him hes 10 months old at the end of this month. standing at 14hh he is roughly 5ft 6 in a rug looking at him next to others.

Buy a 2nd hand one off ebay. That's what we do if we need rugs for growing youngsters. Mark Todd pony rugs are also very good for ponies up to 5'3, loads of adjustment & hard wearing
