If anyone knows anyone in the Southwest area who is looking for a home for a pony/horse - long or short term then please let me know.

I am moving to the farm in just 4 weeks times and I need something to keep my mare company. I don't really care what it is as in height/age etc although a mare would be preferrable.

Only stipulations being that it must be quiet to handle.

Perfectly happy to buy/offer a home/help out anyone who needs to turn out a youngster for the summer etc.

The perfect companion would be approx 15hh + that is capable of light hacking so my daughter could hack out with me every now and then or a large hunter type for OH to ride occassionally ;)

Must be quite hardy as we (will!) live on a hill farm in the middle of Exmoor (field shelter and stables to be built this summer) but no hairy cobs! (sorry, just can't be doing with all that hair!)

Have you tried the usual preloved/gumtree/horsemart searches? Are there any local facebook groups to try, or tack shops etc.? Good luck :)

My friends looking for a loan home for her 15.3hh mare as a broodmare/companion. Im pretty sure she can be lightly hacked too.. She lives out atm unrugged on a hill so would be fine. Iv known this horse since my friend got her & shes lovely. Based gloucestershire. Pm me for her number :)

We've got the most brilliant companion who's been great keeping one of ours company this winter but we're probably too far away for you :( in Shropshire

He's great with any horse, lives out and is soo laid back to handle. 16.2 ID so sturdy yet quality (no flying feathers lol!) He is retired though, so not a riding option.

You could always try www.swhp.co.uk - brilliant rescue charity run by a friend of mine. they do the most amazing work and are always looking for suitable homes for their ponies/horses. They're based in Monmouthshire.

My friend is in Cornwall and has a 15.1ish pretty mare that would make a great companion, used to living out, not hairy but not sure if she would be up to light hacking. She is looking for a home for her - I believe she would be free and it would be permanent. PM me if you're interested and I'll pass on her details.

You could always rescue something for the sales ? Exeter or Taunton maybe worth a look.

Good Luck with the move.

I do have a youngster but she is MEGA hairy and I am beggining to think Dad may have been a shire horse.......so toally not your cup of tea!

Or a cheapie New Forest youngster? Just backing mine and he is as cool as a cucumber and would be great fun for your daughter to do as a project over the summer ( Not mine but if you got one for yourself I mean).

Thank you to everyone who has replied :D

I did have a quick search on Horsemart last night but didn't see anything suitable locally.

Lots of great ideas above and I think I will definitely have a look at the rescue centre/charity option :)

Have you looked at the Mare & Foal Sanctuary website? They're based near Newton Abbot I believe.

Just a word of warning: be careful as to your choice, coz (although I'm sure you realise this) its very easy to panic in the need to get a companion for another horse PDQ, BUT its easy to get stuck with something that's nothing but trouble! and/or doesn't get on with yours.

This happened with my old boy when we lost his pair-bond; I was desperate for something to put in with him coz he was grieving so badly - and a friend had two young unbroken Arabs looking for some turn-out. We thought this was an ideal set up, but sadly it wasn't. Poor old boy still continued to grieve for his friend, and the two youngsters did nothing but hoon around all day and it really wound my old chap up and it was making the whole thing worse for him.

This is why I say be as careful and as fussy in selecting a companion as you would for a horse for your own use; and make sure someone doesn't dump you with either a head-case and/or a walking vets bill, or something really nasty with horrid little habits like kicking, biting, cribbing, or breaking out of the field for a pastime.

Anyway, sorry if I'm teaching Granny to suck eggs! Hope you find something.

Thanks and yes that is really good advice :)

Of course what I am really looking for is an identical replica to the "best little horse in the world" that we are having to leave behind because her owner will want her back - had her for 5 yrs :(
