My horse has pretty much never been happy to take the contact consistently forward - she'll do it for a few steps and then suddenly drop behind it. This is with better riders than me so I'm pretty sure it's not a rider issue. As our schooling work at home is getting more complicated I'm really starting to struggle with the fact that she'd rather sit just fractionally behind the bit. Currently ridden in an eggbutt NS Tranz Angled Lozenge.
So, in desperation, I had a 'try all the bits I can get my hands on' session a few days ago. The holy grail bit was a hanging cheek Neue Schule 'Comfy Contact' - I've never known the horse so happy to go into a contact. Unfortunately the owner doesn't want to sell it, and NS has confirmed to me that after the recall 2 years ago there are no plans to re-introduce it
. (If anyone has one sitting around in 5 1/4 please message me as I will pay £££ for one!)
The second best was a hanging cheek straight bar Happy Mouth.
Annoyingly it's not dressage legal because of the bumps in the mouthpiece. I was looking at the Nathe bits but they don't come as a hanging cheek and the horse much prefers a fixed cheek to loose ring.
Any suggestions? All up to date with teeth etc.
