Hi again,
I looked at my first horse on Sunday. He's a 14.2hh piebald cob, 7yrs 10 months. Lovely boy. I asked every question I could think of, and all the questions and things to look at that everyone advised me (thanks).
I rode him in the school and hacked him out.
He is strong and I am an experienced rider. He cuts corners in the school etc but listens to you when you correct him.
He has a full cheek snaffle, and I'm not sure is this is right. His brakes are fine, is just his steering!
I am going for a 2nd look on Saturday this week, and if I am still sure I will arrange for full vetting etc.
I am soooo excited, but nervous at the same time.
It's just advice regarding the full cheek snaffle I need.

Thanks
Mx

How exciting. You can play around with bitting when (if) you get him - so as long as he's not in a gag, I wouldn't worry. As for steering - this could be a lack of suppleness issue rather than anything else.

He sounds great.

Fingers crossed that you go ahead with the vetting.

Corner cutting has so many possible causes, lack of balance in the horse, weak inside leg from the rider, lack of training and suppling in the horse..and let's not forget that a chunkier horse will have more problems with bending. You might find an improvement with schooling and building in lateral work to encourage the horse to support himself off his hocks..a couple of sessions with a good instructor would help - i wouldn't write the bit off just yet, although if it is single jointed i personally whould change to a double jointed bit so that you can use each side a little more independantly

AmyMay what is wrong with a gag? My horse (who is my first horse) is in a gag. Is this wrong? I am a novice so don't really know anything about bits and bitting I'm afraid! I didn't put him in the gag by the way.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a gag - as with any bit, as long as it fits the purpose.

regards the full cheek snaffle i was always told that they help with stearing. My mare is ridden in a snaffle or a gag or nothing depends how shes feeling lol
