Rhodesian Ridgeback would be my choice too... beautiful looking dogs and would protect your scooby perfectly. I also had a friend who had a lab/rhodie cross that was lovely...
My friend has just taken delivery of her Impreza WRX hatchback - she's got a GSD and his new job is to protect her car keys at night
Bouvier des Flandres - yeah I know they are coated otherwise fit your criteria of a big calm impressive looking breed
Boxer
Bull mastiff
smooth collie
Giant Schnauzer
or take a look at the Russian Black terrier - bred for protection and used in the forces abroad they are ( I'm told) calm easy to train easy going and HUGE !
I would go for a Rottie, as long as you have good lines and are brought up correctly they can be fantastic pets. We are after a Rottie as our next dog.
If you dont want slobber dont have any type of mastiff as trust me they do slobber lol, also I think boxers have this tendancy too.
Greyhounds are brilliant watch dogs though, they will watch the theif take the dvd, tv, radio etc ..
Thanks for all suggestions but I think milor could actually be psychic, as she has listed several of the more unusual breeds I like!
milor - don't have the fencing for an Anatolian but love Bouviers, even with the coat & the drooling! LOL
Haven't been over impressed with the Giant Schnauzers I've met in the UK but am very interested in the Russian Black Terrier - have read about them but never seen one in the flesh!
Wonder if there'll be any in the 'AV Not Seriously Considered' at Crufts?
Boxers & Aussies too lively for me now, though I did know a stunning Boxer years ago that was very calm, trainable & laid back, though a truly formidable guard dog when he needed to be & loyal beyond belief - if I could find one like him, I'd have one like a shot!
anima - thanks for the hefty slap! LOL
Danes sound good, 'til you get to the 'drool on the ceiling' part! I really don't 'do' drool!
Jak, you know you want one of these!!! You already picked out which one!!!
I know your not keen on whites but they sure do grow on you!!!

Yep, I do like the big, fat, wrinkly one at the front there, though he's quite fluffy, so may well turn out to be longcoated!
A white GSD would be quite useful actually, as I live in the middle of nowhere & it's pitch black at night - can't see the blasted collies in the dark!
anima - thanks for the hefty slap! LOL

LOL, neither does my Aunt- she just paints over it when it gets too much!
The biggest downside is that you have to kiss your sofa goodbye, they will either be too fragile and snap or stand up to the dane and be pinched!
