I'm looking for opinions about a situation
A rider local to me has a very nice horse, very well behaved with everyone except the owner! When they get on it rears, bucks, spins tries to bolt etc the riders answer is to take it a big field and gallop it about madly until it's so worn out it can barely move and then hack it out trying to jump everything they can find. Some of the younger riders think said rider is brilliant and their horse is sooooo cool .....their words :p..... but I'm inclined to think it's more a case of learnt behaviour, the horse knows it's going to go for a gallop, jumping etc, so gets excited and the antics start and also it knows most other riders wouldn't tolerate the actions so doesn't start to act up in the first place.
So has anyone else seen similar with any horses? A change for the worse in behaviour when the owner gets on? I've known a few horses that behave worse when a stranger gets on them but this is the first that I've seen the other way round.
I know lots of people offer treats at the end of their post so I can offer a slightly stale mince pie if anyone wants it? :D

I have seen horses who behave badly with their owners when the owner doesn't ride well. I remember one particular horse whose owner kept far too tight a rein and the poor horse got horribly frustrated and would try and buck her off. (Hard not to be sympathetic to the horse in these circumstances!) In the situation you describe it does sound like learned behaviour. I was always taught that it was important to sometimes do walk only rides or walk when the horse is used to galloping so the horse is reminded that pace should be decided by rider, not horse! Worrying that the young riders think she is brilliant. She isn't. It isn't fair on the horse to be allowed to behave this way.

I've seen horses who don't like their rider too, not always necessarily their owner. They aren't stupid, if they are ridden in a horrible manner they are quite right to ditch the rider!
