Hi everyone

Am looking to purchase a good quality potential heavyweight hunter, colt or gelding upto four year old. Would like to buy direct from a stud but would like recommendations please. I don't mind travelling to Ireland - would prefer to stay in this country but will travel.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

many thanks

Any breeding preferences? I know 2 superb yearling colts (Agherlow/Silver Sam and Gurraun Golden Eye/Agherlow) and one colt foal full brother to the 2nd one above which will be available at weaning. All are proper quality types, make lovely hunters (both yearlings were placed in last year's ID foal champs, 3rd and 10th).

Thanks guys, Rowreach, no breeding preferences, its just proving quite difficult to find a county standard heavyweight. Would you have any pictures of the colts?

many thanks

Stick this up in the breeding forum attn Hilly - she doesnt venture into NL so wont see your post. She is a complete bastion of knowledge for Irish breeding, writes about it (comprehensively) covers the shows etc in Ireland.... so I would look at her as a first port of call for recommendations in term of breeding or stud recommendations. She breeds top end sports horses so not touting for business for her! ( and I have my name down for one of her foals - just have to keep reminding her!)

Have you looked on the IDHSGB website? They have a sales page on there and also have a list of studs/breeders some of whom may fairly local to you. I have a 4 yr old H/W youngster who will be for sale shortly but she's a mare!! Good luck with your search I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for.

Are you looking for a serious County level HW - they're hard to find here and even harder in Ireland these days (thanks to HSI's crazy idea that 9" of bone is enough!) My stallion is 17hh with over 10" of bone but of course he's only half the equation and finding mares with the necessary attributes is very hard indeed!

I've got two nice 4 year olds (grey) for sale at present who have the bone, but whether they'll make the height is highly debateable. I DO have a 2 year old colt (bay) who should get there .... no up-to-date pics of him on the website at present - must do something about that! And a 3 year old gelding who'll be 17hh but I think he'll be pushed to make a HW.

(And thanks for the recommendations folks!)

Oh me wants Indigo Thornton

He's a honey, and he's got the bone, but I don't think he'll be quite big enough for the OP. MIGHT stretch to 16.2 as he matures. And while he'll show at low level,or make a nice little dressage horse, I don't think he's County standard.

JG - save that 3yo for me! ;) hehe

All the horses are lovely!
This is the sort of horse I am also looking for (but am happy with MW or HW so a bit more range) but I cant get for another year but I agree with JG that it seems to be VERY difficult to find something big enough and quality enough!!

I think I just need to go buy SilverStream and be done with it! :D

.

Some of us in Ireland are still trying to breed them:)

I am a great fan of pure bred ID but have you considered an alternative?? If you contact "Silversons" on this forum, she breeds Spanish Normans. I have a 3 yr old bred by her and he's close to 17 hh (not 3 till July) and a proper heavyweight. I did a couple of county shows with him last year and he stuck out like a sore thumb against the more TB type youngsters. He was placed but not highly so I decided not to show him as a 3 yr old and wait and bring him out under saddle. A serious pureist ID breeder came to see him last year and surprised herself by liking him! Can email you pics if you like, otherwise contact Silversons, she has youngstock for sale including this years foals. My boys 4 yr old full sister did very well at the futurity evaluations last year and is still owned by the breeder.

i have just looked up the spanish normans and WOW they are nice!

however I cudnt find silversons on the website................. has their name changed? or do you have a link to their website if they have one advertising horses for sale etc?

You really don't need to go to Ireland - they are quite often interested in our horses over here, but interestingly I find that the prices offered for them to go back over the water are somewhat lower than the other way round!!
I have a 3/4 id yearling colt who is HUGE. His 2yo sister is just under 16.3 with a good 9" bone and only time shown last year was reserve champion sport horse at an ID show. He is unfortuantely backward at the moment as he was poorly shortly after foaling, and I have had to be very careful with feeding him to make sure that he didn't have joint problems. VERY big and gangly, but will be a lovely stamp when he catches up with himself, but I think bigger than his sister.
They are around, just be patient.

You could give Mike a call at Bowland ID stud - Their stallion Orbit is a big boy !

Google them or PM me for his mobile number, my mare is in foal to their RID stallion Alices Diamond Slipper

You could try Embla Stud in staffordshire. They have bred pure irish drafts for many years, they originally came from ireland and the queen has been known to use her stallions. Many are well known proven hunters and they are renowned for there temprements. I have one that i bred myself i wouldnt hesitate to use one of there stallions again.

I have a purebred ID gelding rising 3 chestnut with flaxen mane and tail 17hh and 10.5 inches bone. i bought him as a weanling from Roz chadwick at elmshurst stud sire Beeston lord henry, apparently his stock does do well in the show ring. details on the ID website GB.
