Looking for some advice when buying from Ireland or England

Hello,

I recently joined H&H due to the abundance of knowledge I have seen scrolling through the posts. I have always wanted an ID or ISH and am in the states with a limited selection. From what I hear people hear "American" and want to increase the price and take their money. I am most definitely not rich, nor do I have an excess amount of cash. However, ID and ISH in the US are few and far between. The breeders here want 12k for a yearling and over 20k for something started. From my calculations I can buy a horse that has been started and jumping, and ship it here for less than 18k.

I am looking for a kind, safe, yet athletic horse that I can do some eventing with. I have a family and a job so do not have Olympic aspirations, but still a horse that I can learn with and advance my riding.

I'm hoping some of you (kind) folks could give me some direction as to where to look, who is honest? Who should I steer clear of? My husband and I are planning a trip to Ireland in the fall but it seems like I need to work in a portion of that trip to England since there are so many great horses there.

Any and ALL advice is appreciated.

I personally think once you acquire the right horse foe what you want, and then more importantly cost wise ship it. You will end up in excess of the 20K local people are asking.

Hi OP

Are you looking for a young horse to bring on to a high-ish level (**+) or a safe 1* horse which might not be winning after the dressage?
There are various people in Ireland who would be selling both
Are your figures in £ or $? We are in NI and you could get a decent but maybe not super flashy safe novice/potential 1* horse for £12k which has done a good bit
A flashy youngster with the potential for 3* but little miles on the clock would set you back maybe £15k
If you would take a nice but not world beating 5yo which hasn't done much registered competition yet you could pick them up for £8-10k.
Sent me a pm if you want some names/numbers, it does depend what you are after

Popsdosh, my problem is even if I increase my budget her in the states there just isn't the selection. To have all the qualifications I want there seem to be less than 10 horse in a 2000 mile radius here. I feel like there are so many to look at and choose from overseas and they are bred specifically to do what I want.

I can't pm you as you are a new member but know of a cracker for sale at the moment. 16.2hh (but not over big). By Master Imp out of a Ghareeb mare. He's 5, anyone's ride, currently popping round 1m tracks quite happily, cross country schooled, ditches, banks, dykes, kind and good on the road (not sure if he's hacked on his own to date). He's ready to go out and compete. If you pm me an email address I'll get them to send some pics over- it will give you an idea if nothing else! He'll easily do 1 or 2*. Jo

You should check out New Zealand prices are cheap compared to the rest of the world altho the exchange rate from your side isn't as great as it used to be.
This is the general market place but the professional stables have loads available that they don't advertise. I sorted from most expensive first as that is the better end of the market generally (or people with delusions)

:) Def drug test before buying while on the SJ circuit in Ireland it was pretty common in the top stables sadly.
