Right before our move to the UK my teenager's cat passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition. It was very sad for all of us and she didn't feel like getting a new cat at the time. But now she wants to start looking. We have 2 dogs and another cat and her little guy Zeus fit in well because he was so laid back and lovable. I should say we had the cats prior to the dogs. We've always gone through Siamese Rescue in the US to adopt our cats because they foster and can tell us the personality and if a cat is "dog friendly" or "cat friendly." A unfazed, friendly kitten might do but we're having a hard time finding any kittens at the rescues in Scotland. I've thought about seeking out a breeder, but have no idea who is trustworthy. Open to suggestions. We've always had old fashioned Siamese, that's what I grew up with, but aren't married to that breed.

If you would like to look for a Siamese, there is an excellent Facebook group called ( not surprisingly )UK Siamese and Oriental cat chat. It has some amazingly helpful members who can point you in the direction of all the rescues for these breeds. Very often somebody will also know of an ex breeding girl or stud . I do know that there are breeders from Scotland on it, but they might all be producing the more modern type rather than the old apple heads. Just join, post a pic if you want or pose the question of what you are looking for. I'm a member as these breeds are absolutely my thing and ive had them for nearly 40 years. Happy to advise you further if you would like.
Other than that, if it's laid back you want i'd suggest a Ragdoll!

I've found that Facebook has 'low key' rescue/rehoming groups run usually by one person but with a network of committed fosterers who take in the cats while they await their new home. So they're not in a cattery but in a home. The cats details are posted and you can phone and chat with the fosterer who will know the cats personality, likes, dislikes etc and whether it would be a good fit for your home. Some of the cats will still be in their old home and move from there to you eg when their owner is moving into care. For these smaller rehomers/rescues take a look at CatChat https://www.catchat.org/index.php

Also, nationally The Cinnamon Trust looks for homes and currently there is a beautiful Birman looking for a home in the North with dogs but unfortunately not another cat but it gives you an idea https://www.facebook.com/TheCinnamonTrust.

My daughter mentioned Ragdolls as a possibility because of their laid back personalities. Do you know any good breeders or groups for those?

I don't i'm afraid , but would definitely see if there is a FB group devoted to them. There almost certainly will be
Also there are a couple of Ragdoll owners on here who if they see this post will probably be only too pleased to share photos and offer advice. Crazy Cat Lady for one has a gorgeous Ragdoll and would probably be pleased to help. She also has a stunning British Shorthair I helped her to find and that is another breed that could suit you well if you like their look. Not quite as laid back but I adore them and have had several. Also Chinchilla Persians which are very laid back and not too bright. Lots of brushing needed though and OMG if they go out and you have a hay barn....nuff said:eek::D

I don’t know if you have directly contacted the rescues or just looked on their websites but a lot of rescues don’t advertise kittens. I managed to get a kitten from my local rescue because I gave them my situation (I have a dog and adult cat) and although I was quite up for taking on a mature cat they suggested a kitten that was the last one of three and two were going together. He wasn’t shown on their website at all.
