So I have done this previously... quick google to see if I can learn anything useful before a class.
But the tables have turned and I had a "suggested friend" on facebook who had no mutual friends but just happens to be ride judging a class I have entered in a few weeks. The ONLY way this will have happened is he has been searching me up! He's cropped up on my personal profile which is quite locked down but there are a couple of pictures visible that feature the horses whereas I have a public profile for my horse and a page where he could find out infinitely more about me but probably not by searching my proper name!
I am now interested in how the class goes...

I get lots of suggested friends all the time, none of them remotely connected to me in anyway. Some are friends of friends and some not even that, but I still never add them or click on their profile whatever they are. Surely he couldn't access your FB page unless you have accepted or sent a friend request to him that he has accepted?

I am not sure how it might matter to the showing class you are doing. Back in the day obviously we didn't have internet but we sure as heck used to check out the competition at shows, perfectly normal thing to do and I am guessing this is just the modern equivalent of seeing how good the others that compete on your circuit in the same classes actually are before facing them in the ring. :)

Could it be possible that Facebook has linked you for having the same interest and possibly both putting that you're going to the show or following the show or something? Or maybe other competitors in your class have been looking at you and the judge and so Facebook linked you?

ONLY is probably over the top but most likely... we have no overlap as I only have a few horse people on that profile, and not that many people overall. Where I am A who knows B and they are C but know B it would say "1 mutual friend" and this doesn't. There is no reason why this person would crop up on my list, similarly I'm not sure why I'd crop up for them in any other reason

Well as I have said already I have suggested friends who are in no way connected to me or anybody I know on a regular basis so there is no reason why they would crop up on my list but they do, as well as people who show as having X number of friends in common. As far as I know how FB operates is pretty global so I just can't see why it would be different for your friend suggestions. If your settings are locked down then he couldn't see on your page anyway regardless of who he or you might know if you are not accepting a friend request and not sending him one. I think perhaps I am not understanding the issue here, but that isn't unusual for me these days.😊

I just checked who the ride judge is as I wondered if I was the link.

I have a good friend who's brother has just been accredited as a ride judge by the Shire Horse Society. I'm not Facebook friends with him but it could have been an A B C D link, particularly if he had recently linked with other Shire Horse people or groups you might also be in.

It isn't me. The person I know isn't the judge for the Royal Cheshire this year.

You are over thinking this. You are both interested in showing and whats more in showing ridden heavy horses. I would think you are almost bound to be suggested as contracts for each other.

From Facebook help:

What information does Facebook use to show suggestions in People you may know?

People you may know suggests people you might be likely to add as a friend on Facebook. Friend suggestions come from things such as:

Having friends in common.

Your profile information and networks (e.g. your current town/city, school or work).

Your Facebook activity (e.g. joining groups or being tagged in the same photo or post).

Contacts that you or someone you may know uploaded to Facebook or Messenger.

If you upload your contacts through the Facebook app, learn how to manage contact uploading. If someone has uploaded their contacts and it includes your mobile phone number or email address, you may appear as friend suggestions for each other.

FB listens to your phone calls, knows what you look at on the internet, where you go, etc, etc. I'd have been surprised if he wasn't suggested tbh
