Hey everyone...sorry if this has been discussed before...

My horse (Signature pic) has been in full-time for the past month, getting out to stretch his legs for an hour in the afternoon and then usually most of the weekend (as i don't want him seizing up but fields are too bad to be out as much as i would like.)

Anyhoo...I noticed his fetlocks looked abit puffy on sunday night, then sister went to muck out yesterday and foned me to say he had been standing in same spot for hours and both hind legs were swollen right up to his hock and he wouldn't let her anywhere near them.

Rushed home, and pulled him out of stable to have proper look, thankfully he trusts me enough to let me touch them...
They look really sore, swollen up quite badly and slightly warm and have noticed the front one is going the same way.

Last winter his fetlocks used to swell very slightly, one at a time. He doesnt look lame on them but doesnt love having them touched.

I dont want to cold-hose them yet as i was told this could make him stiff and even more sore.

Anyone have any idea what this may be/ have similar problems? or any suggestions?

Hi OldHand...Hes getting very little hard feed really compared to last winter...only about 2.5kgs in total over two feeds.

He gets Alfa-A oil, Spiller H&P cubes and speedi-beet (Which i think am changing to Fibre-beet.

& HLB left you a comment about wind BTW lol
I had actually thought it was someting to do with being in and something to do with circulation mayb?

In that case cold-hosing or straping wouldnt have any positive effect I take it?

Is he off colour in any other way CVS? It could be lymphangitis in which case he might need some veterinary help and he might get repeated bouts in the future. I'd keep a close eye on him but if it doesn't resolve in 24 hrs, I'd have the vet out x

A lot of horses suffer from swollen legs when they first change their routine and are in more. Rather than looking at hard feed, look at the hay/haylage as that is usually the culprit - lots of protein suddenly

It should get better the more he is used to being in, if not, consider downgrading the quality of the hay and split 50/50 with what you are feeding now. I would also change the Alfa to HiFi.

One of my horses get this but only for a few days and within hours of coming in from the field, but he live out most of the time dure to hateing the stable, but when he comes in to be ridden they swell. Within a couple of circules hes fine (then his boots slide down). i put this down to the fact that hes on really good grass and the protiens are farly high anyway.
