Hi, I have a very calm 16.2hh ID X TB who gets rather excited going XC. I ride him in a french link snaffle, but gets a bit strong XC. I have been looking at slightly stronger bits for him, only for the XC phase, just so that i have some more control! I don't want anything severe because he is light in the mouth on the flat and very responsive, so i just want a bit to give me a little more say in what speed we go at! The loop ring snaffle looks ok but I don't know much about it. Has anyone used it before and what are your thoughts? Also I would be glad to hear any other suggestions, although I am not considering anything stronger than a snaffle.

Thanks a lot.
Emma :)

The loop ring snaffle is based on the dutch gag and is often called a wilkie, it will give you some extra brakes when needed without the strength the leverage of the gag gives. Our eventer goes XC in one, it is just enough to help when that extra control is required, he is very happy with it.

I call it a beval which I think technically has large rings. I use two reins on a very sensitive mare with it, and love it. Gives me the control I need with the refined choice of when I want it.
