I was out riding and a loose terrier came tearing past me on the road in a village. It was no sooner seen than gone and not a lot i could do about it on a horse. I've just been back with treats a lead, I saw it but again just running scared. Tried throwing treats in its direction but clearly I'm not going to get anywhere near close enough to grab and don't want to scare it out of the village.
I've knocked a few doors, one of which i thought had two terriers like that but no reply and I could hear two barking inside the house I thought.
Ive messaged a few people I know who live in the village. Ive put it on the village FB page (but of course needs checking by admin so not yet posted)
What would you do?

This happened to me a few months ago and I did pretty much the same as you. Dog was in a panic and wouldn't be caught, a few cars stopped to try and help and those people couldn't catch it either. 15 minutes later half a dozen posts got approved on the community page documenting the dog's path into town and the owners responded. Dog ended up roaming for several days!

Oh don't feel bad, there's not much else to be done if the dog won't be caught, except to make efforts as you have done to identify and alert the owner.

I did once have success parking up, opening the boot and walking away - dog wouldn't come to me but jumped in the car of their own accord - but depends how wee a terrier it is!

Apparently it's not uncommon for even the owner to have trouble recapturing them in some cases, certain dogs go into panicky feral mode quite easily, as happened in the case I mentioned (dog was found several miles from home in the end).
