I know I have been pretty vocal about my dislike of dogs in the past, but I am pleased to say that my opinion of them is changing (thanks to Cesar Millan and Daddy). However, I still think canines should be banned at eventing. They could have caused a couple of nasty accidents today at Badminton and Bruce Davidson Jr's ride at Lexington was further proof that something needs to be done. I just hope there is not a serious or fatal accident before action is taken.

This thread is in the competition forum to......they had some intreasting ideas like fining ppl whose let dog is not under control..

would seem a shame to ban the dogs as the commentator said yesterday there is probably nearly as many as people! they should just obviously be on a lead

No worrys about starting another thread you'll often find ppl who only visit certain parts of HHO i just thought u might be intrested in that one to!

A lot of dogs are fine on a leash, but all it would take is one dog to slip his/her lead or a careless owner to cause an horrific accident. As I've said before, they did not do anything about the flag poles until after the tragic death of Icare D'Auzay.

It is not just the riders and horses, a loose dog could easily bite someone in the crowds. And their mess is one of the worst substances to come in contact with and is sufficient enough reason for a ban to put in place. It can ruin clothing and footwear and cause sight problems if the dog hasn't been properly wormed. Some owners do pick it up, but a lot don't and they should be heavily penalised for their actions (or lack thereof).

And how about making the owners of those dogs yesterday apologize in person to Rodney and Aaron. That would be the ultimate in humiliation for them.

As a responsible dog owner I totally agree with some of what Over2You has written although not every dog owner is irresponsible most pick up after their dogs, I seem to have nappy sacks in every pocket of clothing possible!!!!

I was appauled at the dogs chasing after the horses yesterday, it was obvious that the dog chasing Aaron wasnt on a lead as it has no collar on unless it was a slip lead and they arent very good and when the lady went on the course to collect it she seemed to be laughing. I think that owners should be fined and made to apologise to the riders. I do not think they should be banned as most people are sensible.

There's always someone who ruins it for everyone else. The lady who collected her dog and was laughing (possibly) should have to apologise indeed and be fined. Not only is there the possibility of accidents but also the fact that if the rider is in a high position after dressage and the horse spooks a little then that could possibly knock the rider out of contention for a £60k win.

As I said on an earlier post re the same subject why not get the woman to pay for aarons expenses. Then maybe they would start to relise how much it meant to people and why its not acceptable to put people at risk. All I can say is thank god there was the bale in the way or else I dread to think what might have happened.

Since I don't want my dogs to be left alone for to long, if there was a ban in Sweden, it would mean I wouldn't be able to go. About the other "dangers" that dogs can cause, don't know if it's the same over there, but how about all the crushed glass-bottles and other litter that people leave behind that can cut up my dogs paws, get eaten by my dogs? Litter that could just as easily be eaten by a small child in the age where they put all sort of things in their mouth, glass that just as easily could cut a child or adult if they fall?

On other hand I agree about that there should be fines, maybe a "dog-catcher/police"? Or how about checking the leashes at the entrance? At football matches today people usually have to count on being searched, so they don't bring anything not allowed into the arena, it surely wouldn't be more difficult to just check that the leashes fit? Hopefully it would also make the owner more aware about their responsibilities.

I would still like to be able to go to the outdoor horse events I do go to, with my dogs.

Agreed, Finnish..............

The gate checks are a fab idea, and it would allow the responsible owners whose dogs are no problem to be unaffected.

I took my collie to Blair (wouldn't take the huskies!!!). He was on a lead, collar was done up tight, and I had my husky walking belt on (think hands free dog walking). No way was he getting off the lead and I had a large supply of poo (nappy) bags too. I think entrance checks and fines would definately be the way forward!! The vast majority of canine visitors are fine. It's just a real shame there's a minority out there that spoil it. As for those dogs that chased the Horses at Badminton - owners and dogs should have been kicked out IMHO.

Could the dogs not be made to wear a harness or half check collar (not sure what its called really) to minimise the chance of slipping out of it??

I went last year and while I stood at the sunken road a child wandered into it

Now that is really bad.....

Considering the amount of dogs that go, one or two getting loose is a very small percentage........ still unnacceptable though!
