I have an older horse that has always been prone to having loose droppings if his hay is too rich. We thought we had this under control but he has now become very loose to the point of having to wash his stable boots every day as they are sodden. Has anyone else had a similar situation or can offer advice on how to treat?

Possibly the grass coming through? Try pro and pre biotics and/or some bran. Also consult vet as salmonella is possible for horses to contract.

I swear by Protexin Gut Balancer for my old mare - she used to get quite loose droppings on rich hay and spring grass but we have had no problems at all since feeding her this. They make a 'Quick Fix' version as well which is good to get them back to normal before going onto the normal daily balancer. http://www.protexin.com/products/starter-pack/6162 I can't recommend this stuff highly enough!

Old fashioned - but dry bran. (Not wet - it has the opposite effect!) If you rely on it long term you also need to feed limestone powder to keep the calcium / potassium balance. Gut balencers are great - but bran is cheaper!
