That's what I thought when it said the gate had been forced. I've been involved in a similar situation years ago which luckily only ended up with a horse with a gash on his leg after jumping the central reservation but that was due to negligent workers leaving the gate open and all of our geldings got up onto the M6, apparently clever wagon drivers created a barrier to contain the horses.
