My horse is currently rode in a loose ring French link snaffle. However, over time it has started to rub him just above the corner of mouth where he has pink skin. I have tried rubber bit rings, bit butter and Vaseline to prevent rubbing but they haven't really helped.

I have tried schooling in an eggbutt which doesn't rub but he goes so much better in a loose ring so was wondering if there are any other alternatives to the loose ring?

Thanks

Sprenger do a loose ring but the end of the mouthpiece has an extended part, explained that badly, think it's called a turnado 2 type, or something similar. Theory is action of a loose ring without the pinching. They also do some bits just in stainless steel, so they don't cost the earth. Think Cork Farm Equestrian list them

eldonian do a few loose rings and I have found they don't rub where cheaper alternatives have caused a problem, they are still fairly cheap around £25 but in my opinion much better quality than some of the other brands available.

those rubber bit disks! Okay they're not dressage legal, but being ridden in them for 5mins for the odd test shouldn't cause too much damage? Fine for my boy anyway! I also use Bit Butter occasionally - seems to help with the healing process and reduces the occurrence too!

what about a proper Fulmer, it has cheeks but the ring outside is loose.

This. I have a french link version and have also seen single jointed versions. If you don't use the little keepers to attach the top cheek to the bridle, a fulmer is a very mobile bit. My one who dislikes fixed rings loves the fulmer without keepers. Also are you quite sure the bit is wide enough? I find loose ring bits only rub when the bit is too small.

I'll definitely have a look at both of these. Thanks for your help!
