I have a neue schule starter bit on my mare who's not long coming up to 6 now. As its got the loose rings, I always worry that they may catch her mouth so have always ridden her in the rubber rings to protect her mouth. However a few years down the line they're looking a bit unsightly and she's (hopefully!!) grown up a bit by now. So stupid question, but if I took them off would I know that they are pinching her or would it just be best to buy a new pair and get on with it?

Thank you in advance :)

I was always told that if a loose ring pinches, the bit may be too narrow for the horse.

Alternatively, try putting something like bit butter, or vaseline on the creases of the mouth and it should help.

Rubber rings should always be only a temporary solution to a problem. They do deteriorate over time due to the chemicals naturally occurring in saliva and general wear and tear. Best to buy new ones if you absolutely have to use them. Howevr, a good quality loose ring bit will always have counter sunk holes in it for the rings to run through and so it won't be able to pinch.

My chap has had a loose ring JP snaffle for 13 years and has had no problems. What you do need to do (with any bit) is to wash it after every use as saliver, mixed with whatever has been chewed that day will collect on the bit, dry and eventally cause rubbing and soreness in the horse's mouth if not removed. Wash the rubber rings at the same time, of course.

You should have no problem riding in a loose ring without the rubbers providing the bit is the correct size. It's the same with all tack, if you have the correct size & firt then there should be no issues.

The bit is the correct size :) and she has never had any visual issues of it pinching her, just out the rubber bits on as I'd only just backed her and was being protective. Interesting about the rubber and toxics and stuff! Will def take off. Thinking I upgrading to the NS universal bit, I think it's called which if I remember is fixed.
