Hiya,

Hopefully I should take delivery of my new lorry next week and am in the process of sorting out the insurance and breakdown recovery.

Unfortunately the lorry doesn't have room underneath the chassis (so I'm told..) for a spare wheel but the companies I have called so far have specified that you must carry a spare wheel for the recovery to be valid. Is this the case with all companies? I'd like to carry one, it's just finding it a suitable home!

I always carry one and when we had a lorry that wouldn't carry one underneath ,I used to have one inside but it was a pain. I think it would be expensive to get someone out with a wheel and tyre, sorry not a lot of help

NFU require us to carry a spare TYRE, but not a spare wheel.
perhpsa this has been updated.
We have had our spare wheel fitted under the chassis on a bracket,
Skirt lockers along each side mean it went under between the underslung ramp springs.
Can you fit one inside somewhere?
Before we had this wagon, we had a 3 hrose herringbone that had triangular 2ft of wasted space at the front of the horse area, beteen the first partitiona nd the living wall, so we mounted one there, ( access from living, if needed in a hurry)

If you don't have a spare, and have a blow out, you may be charged something lik3 160 for a tyre alone from emergency mobile service, whereas our garage gets us a tyre fo 70.
Dread to think what a wheel would cost in such circumstances if that was damaged

Can't help about tyre query but am too with Anthony Evans and had to call their rescue service out a month ago. Can't praise them enough for the speed and help they offered.

Hi i work for a commercial recovery company we do loads of horseboxes being in the surrey/hampshire area, most breakdown clubs dont mind if your lorry doesnt have a spare,we either get a mobile tyre fitter out or recover to members local garage, you would be amazed at the load of old crap we go out to ,i cant believe they would even put their horses on these lorry's but they do

Its an idea to write doen the details on your tyres in daylight, at home, on a dry day, and stick in wiht your lorry paperwork adn recovery number.
We wer asked what size tyres when we had to call them, to make sure that tahe Mobile fitter arrived with the right size on board. ( and not just sold the last of that size on his van!)
Donlt want to be scrabbling round for the detiails when you are stressed out, in the wet or dark.

Can you imagine the size of the jack you would need to lift the lorry enough to change the wheel? Just wondered if anyone had actually changed a wheel on their lorry?

They bring out a specialised air jack to change the tyres (at least thats what I think it is!) makes a bit of noise, as does removing the nuts from the tyre to remove it. It is not a job you can just do by yourself!

I think they have always brought the new tyres out to us (and yes scrabbling to get the details off the side of the tyre on the side of the A1 is not fun

) just in case the spare is not good. This was helpful as the nuts holding on the spare tyre hadn't been moved for so long they were nigh on impossible to remove on the side of the road

We are with the NFU roadside assistance thingy, cannot praise them enough.

Thank you all, I'm going to make some more calls today and have a look under the lorry when I get it next wk in the hope of finding a space. If not I'm thinking it may have to be mounted in the horse area or become a shelf in the loo!

They do use an air jack as we had a blow out in a friends lorry on the M4 a few weeks ago with 3 on board. I must admit it was a very scary experience with traffic whizzing by at 70mph!
