Lorry CCTV

wow ROG is not responsible for the laws as they stand he is just offering information.

i think if you looked at your screen to see your horse going down your attention may be drawn away from your driving until you have stopped your vehicle, i am not debating wether you want to have the cctv or will keep using it but it cannot be denied that it is a distraction for the driver therefore potentially putting all road users at risk.

if your horse has gone down whilst travelling the noise and motion of the vehicle would alert you, i see them as another waste of money gadget personally as they dont prevent anything going wrong and if you crash because you are distracted then you and your horse and other road users could all be injured.
i think hands free and sat navs should be banned entirely as they are also a huge distraction to drivers but thats just my opinion

That is no different than
glancing down at your speedo or fuel gauge
the radio
sat nav
cctv
girl on the street in a mini skirt
builders showing bums as you pass.
flashing blue lights coming up behind you
an insect flying in your car
children screaming in back back of lorry in living
sun in your eyes
so much can cause an accident.
lighting a fag when driving
kids in car entertainment screens in the back of head rest
looking at the scenery as you drive
looking up at road signs or junction signs
glancing down at passing cars.
watching the inside mirror as you overtake a slow vehicle to make sure you have past it before you pull in.
checking drivers mirror before you overtake

all the above are distractions and make you take eyes of the road ahead.
For me a quick look at horses (when safe to do so) Is far less distraction when I can stop a serious incident happening which could lead to far more likely to have a crash.

As I said young horse got out of head collar on the M3 he was loose and trying to turn round and bite the other . I pulled off service station and quickly restrained him. I would have no clue what was happening in the back had it not been for the CCTV.

We continued without a hitch.

my CCTV will stay as is.

I think some people are missing the point and have been really rude to ROG on this thread. Whether you agree with the law or not, whether you think the law is stupid, whether you think that there are a thousand different ways of breaking the law while driving that occur commonly on the roads around you, whether you dont intend to alter your use of cctv or not the fact is that none of this is down to ROG so why are people being so haughty and rude?

ROG is a great resource who offers hours worth of advice on here for free. Ever heard the phrase 'don't shoot the messenger'?

I have just read the link that ROG has posted on the other thread:
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regulation/109/made

The law states that a CCTV camera can be used to see information "about the state of the vehicle or its equipment". I would interpret this as including knowledge about what is happening in the back of a horse lorry or in the top section of a double-decker bus.

Does anyone know of any prosecutions that have happened because a horse lorry driver could see CCTV footage whilst driving?

Your interpretation is flawed - had it said LOAD then you would be correct

VOSA could answer your question on prosecutions for this if you wish to call then

Thanks both

In none of the posts did I TELL anyone what to do

What each driver does now that they have been informed of the law is up to them - I am not the police or VOSA etc

I had my cameras fitted last week on the new box and they are brill. The screen comes off as I have found sometimes with the old box, not all the time they need this out for plating, and I have reverse and a camera in horse area. Good bit of kit made by Ring Automative for 12v or 24v and the screen has a good picture. It can be switched off easily and flicked onto each camera without having to go in reverse, the old system didn't do this. Very useful for deciding how to get out of spaces at shows, before reversing.

Well it's abit ridiculous as the cars now day have screens I the front that driver can see and sat nav that you have to keep looking at so I don't understand why this would be points.

Ditto - Thanks for the info ROG; I dont like it as i find the cctv useful and reassuring that my horses are ok, but I had no idea before that it was illegal.

I use one that is central in cab and even angled slightly to the passenger seat (with no passenger) I can still see some of the image - would that count??

that would be illegal as the driver can see it but it would probably depend on what enfoecement officer you got as to whether that would lead to prosecution if stopped

We are not being rude, we merely answered OP post when Rogue comes in and tells us what the law is, when we say we know but going to continue anyway he starts telling me I will get points etc.

All he has to say when one of us says we will continue or law is stupid etc is say up to you.

He said it himself I will incur points like saying that will occur immediately as I said I have had it 8 years when going to test the guy takes it off window it passes , then when I get it back it goes on again.

Non of us have been rude we all are saying the same thing we will continue to use them for our horses safety.

We get the general point he is making. But you wont change our minds or stop us using them if we want to.

My lorry went and passed three MOT's with the camera and screen still in place, we were even watching what was going on behind us through the monitor and no-one said a word about it at the VOSA testing station.
