Just wondering if any of you can give me a clue as to what you would think acceptable as lorry kilometrage (non-horsebox kms). Some examples: MAN 14.280, bj 1999, 390.000km; Scania, 220, bj 97, 665.000km, (this sounds HUGE kilometrage to me); I am sure my F reg Cargo has a fraction of this kind of kmage, but I could be wrong...

Milage is not a problem - it is how they are maintained. My lorry is ex-fleet from TNT and has 380k km on the clock but will have been maintained to a schedule regardless of cost.

That's what I was thinking, I know if they were commercial vehicules they get lookede after, which something that has only been a horsebox might not have. The scania looks really rather nice....

Just make sure it is cold when you try it (the engine) and doesn't smoke excessivly on startup and that it starts easily without too much top end rattling or any bottom end clunking and check the condition of the oil and water.

Make sure the air tanks fill up OK and that they are not visibly loosing pressure and assuming it rides on air, make sure they level OK.

Mae sure there is no slip in the clutch or in the auto box and the sterring is tight.

All common sense really. Horsebox only milages are often skimped on in the way of maintenance.

worth noting its very easy to change a tacho in a lorry

very true
condition matters more than mileage

Mileage on a lorry, specially if it's from one of the major carriers, is not a major problem. They are inspected & serviced regularly throughout their time with these companies. Many have their oil changed twice as often as is strictly necessary as well. If the vehicle has come straight from a carrier you will probably get a computer printout of everything ever done to it, right down to a bulb change.

i agree with all the above points. if the vehicle has been used for logistics legislation requires that all vehicles (HGV) undergo 6 weekly inspections for road worthy-ness, and due many of the contracts undertaken and terms set by the manufacturer of the vehicle ( many are lease vehicles) they have to be maintained and serviced on a very regular basis to comply with the contractural terms, which is better for you as the purchaser as you get a well looked after chassis/cab with service history too. I would beware of super low mileage vehicles which means one of two things - it has been stood around doing not alot - why - problems?? and secondly has it had a tacho change which can be identified at the back of the odeometor for the correct mileage reading. high mileage is not a problem as the vehicles have been doing a job and the engine is designed to be running up anddown the motorway etc up to 24 hrs a day - they are not making money standing still. personally I would be going for the scania - love em' they are the rolls royce of HGV, and as long as it has been well maintained then it is the best choice for a horsebox.

I've just bought a 1995M MAN 8.163 with 600k KM on it - MAN main dealer garage (not who I bought it from) assured me if has been maintained it should have no problems at all getting to 900k and they regularly see higher mileage than than - ours is a minter, not a mark on her and previous owner who is a friend had her since she was 8months old.

Do have a query about her though but I'kll make a new post on that!
