I have a lovelyld ifor Williams trailer. The smaller one (for horses up to 15.2 I think) and it's lovely. However my mare is still growing and looks a bit cramped - if she wasn't such a sweetheart I wouldn't pop her in it. I also can't drive it as I need to take a test so have to rely on my father (who has a very active life himself) to take me places. He's not the most calming influence either and is sometimes more hindrance than help (tide is away things you're still using and moves stuff about!) especially when your nerves are playing up and you're stressed.
I've been looking at taking a lorry test for a while now (rigid hgv) as it would come in handy and then maybe get the next level up so I could drive a trailer or arctic or lorry with trailer which would be amazing to share driving a couple of friends who carriage drive and have those set ups. Test is pretty pricey so would have to save up.

Now I don't know an awful lot about lorries (other than how the engine works) so I'm not sure how much it costs to insure one or get its plating or if it needs anything else to be allowed on the road (I know nothing!) I do know it's often cheaper to buy an hgv instead of 7.5t but I don't really need a huge one!
I know 3.5t need a normal mot but the payload wouldn't be good for 2 I don't think and they seem very overpriced compared to a bigger one.
Any knowledge of lorries and what tests need doing to go in the road would need great. And where can you get its mot done (I think that's the plating?) or is it a case of going to one place miles away for a whole day?

Your insurance will vary and depend on your age. Our 7.5t merc, valued circa 25k driven by two named drivers both over 50 and including full recovery is £500 a year.

Plating is straight forward and possibly easier than it used to be now that VOSA have closed many of their testing stations and handed the work to independent testers. The fees have rocketed though.

Rocketed doesn't sound good! How bad is it?

I'm pretty good at getting insurance for driving as have so many different blasted things to drive so glad it's not too bad. Happy to whack some people on it to bring it down as well. I'm insured on some pretty hefty cars (engine size etc) so doesn't sound too dissimilar to those prices. Why do V8s cost so much to insure?! Haha maybe they charge for the gorgeous noise they make :p

Do they just need a plating then? (and insurance) and does tax cost a lot? I'd be getting something as cheap as possible so under 10k if possible, nothing flash. Serviceable is fine!

My last insurance was with shearwater, and equine breakdown, that cost in total £345, that was fully comp, any driver over 25, and with no claims bonus. I thought that was a pretty good price. Don't forget, a 7.5 tonner. will cost a lot less than a 3.5 ton, but you should take an expert with you to check a lorry out. They also are best used on a regular basis, otherwise you might have diesel issues from it standing a long time. I had one break down on me due to that. Finding a decent lorry fitter that won't rob you blind, can be an issue. I do all routine stuff myself, including taking to test, which is in the region of £145 including lane fees.
