This could be long so hope you are sitting comfortably while I try to explain!

My lorry was stolen in September and my insurers paid out. This lorry had been owned by myself for 3.5 years so I was into my fourth year of insurance when making the claim for theft.

As I understand it I had in effect "banked" 3 years of no claims discount (only one of which was with the insurer who paid out).

I rang the insurers today for a quote for my new lorry and was horrified to discover they are saying I have no no claims discount and that despite keeping the vehicle in a far more secure place complete with a tracker, my premium is almost 100% more!

Any clues how I can negotiate a more reasonable price. I knew that despite the claim not being my fault I would get stung I hadnt banked on that level if increase, my jaw nearly hit the floor.

Large glass of pink wine if you got as far as this.

That is the whole point of no claims bonus, unless you have cover against losing your no claims bonus,if you make a claim ,you loose it.

I know, but to lose all of it? Am aware it can be protected, what I wasnt aware was that one claim would wipe out the whole lot. Even when I took my first policy with no bonus etc it was no where near as much as that and inflation is not that high!

It stinks, I got my first car stolen years ago and my next quote was that much I couldnt afford to have a car.
Hubby got hit by a bin wagon and when he got his renewal they said hed claimed so it went up. He argued it wasnt his fault but they said technically he had still had a claim whos ever fault it was even though the car was replaired at the cost of the other insurer. The whole insurance thing is a con.

Louby, he should only have lost his NCB until the claim was settled in his favour, and then his NCB should have been reinstated and the extra premium returned to him.

Louby I agree it is a con. My car is currently at the body shop being repaired after someone ran into the back of it when it was icy, again not my fault, I was stationary but you can bet your bottom dollar I will end up paying for it on an increased premium even if the other side admit liability and pay up and then again when the trade in price is less coz of a bump.

One thing is for sure, the innocent party are always the loser!

No way! Once the claim has been settled fully in your favour, your NCB will be reinstated and if you had to pay an increased renewall because of the claim. You will be entitled to a refund.

That is worth knowing and will bear that in mind when the renewal for the car comes through.

Shame they are not applying the same theory to the lorry as again that wasnt my fault but guessing that as there is no one on the other side in that case I am penalised with the massive increase in premium. Will be doing some serious shopping around I think.

Thanks, He has protected no claims so hasnt lost that but when we rang round for quotes they all said he is classed as having a claim even though it wasnt his fault. He also had to pay upfront the excess whcih although he got it back once enerything was settled, in my eyes stinks. He was sat eating his dinner in his car, engine off and the bin wagon reversed into him. Crazy

One thing to remember is it's a No Claims Bonus..... Not a No Blame Bonus......is doesn't matter if you are not to blame, unless you have a protected NCB then your premium will be affected.

Understand that but it still leaves a very unpleasant taste when you are a victim through no fault of your own. It was bad enough to lose my lorry and its contents, the insurance situation just rubs salt into the wound.
