Hi guys ,

im looking at doing my licence to drive me 7.5 tonne lorry and wondered if any one has done this recently and has an idea of price ,what to expect etc and also what you do about learning can you drive on l plates with someone who has the licence on my full car driving licence ??

:)

a mate of mine does this for a living. they charge £795 for lessons and tests. i don't know if you can get another driver to go with you on L plates though, sorry.

R.O.G is the person to talk to for this!
Who is he....:D

Firstly there is the choice of doing C1 or C
If the school is using a large van like a 5 tonner then its usually easier and a bit cheaper to do C1
If the school is using as full sive C1 7.5 tonner then go for C because the cost etc will be virtually the same
DO NOT NOT NOT GO TO A BROKER but go and VISIT a few LGV schools before deciding which one and certainly before parting with any money
Some schools do free assessment :)

The cost can be between 900 to 1500 quid from start to finish but I recommend having 2000 to hand in case of retests

D4 medical - do not pay more than about £50 - your own GP does NOT have to do this medical
Google LGV medicals

D2 form - tick C and D - nothing else

Dinner time now so will add more later in new post on this thread

YUM - nice dinner with roast spuds :):)

Where was I? - oh yes....

These are the modules you will need to drive a C1 LGV privately
(If you intend to drive a private LGV C after passing the test and are under age 21 let me know)

Modules
1a theory
1b HPT
3 practical 1 hour road drive plus reverse in test centre and a few safety questions

You will NOT need modules 2 and 4 because they are for the INITIAL LGV DRIVER CPC and are only needed if driving LGVs commercially

What have I forgotten? .....

Oh yes - practice prior to training - starting now....
Lose the rear view mirror in your car and use BOTH side mirrors befor doing anything and check then BOTH every few seconds
Blind spot check before moving off
TRY never to come to a complete stop - not always possible but TRY TRY TRY - that will mean looking and planning much further ahead so you can ease off early but not too early so you miss an opportunity

That'll do for now

OOPS I missed the supervising drive bit .....

The supervising driver of a C1 LGV MUST MUST MUST have passed the DSA LGV test that covers that category which means those that only have C1 by getting a pre 1997 car licence cannot supervise

Lets say you have a C1 and a supervising driver...
You need to have the C provisional on your licence before you can venture onto public roads
Ordinary (car) L plates must be fitted front and back
Correct insurance for a LGV learner

If you were thinking about using your own C1 for the test then there are strict rules governing the size, condition and the mirrors for the examiner to be considered

I sat my hgv class 1 (don t evan know which class that is now ) with paddy at Melmerby training services at melmerby. Thi si just off the A1 north of Boroughbridge He has a great reputation and the test would be sat in Darlington.
