Hi all,

I have tried searching for answers to this on the internet but am finding myself more confused than when I started!

Am I right in saying that a C1 licence entitles you to drive a lorry between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes and a C licence entitles you to drive anything over 3.5 tonnes full stop?

Also can you do a C test with a normal licence? And am I right in thinking that you have to do a theory and have a medical to do it?

Thanks,

If we leave trailers aside, C1 clears you for anything up to 7.5T.

C allows you to drive a rigid lorry (not an artic) of any weight. Again, trailers make it complicated so leave them out of the calculation.

If you are post-97, you will need to apply for a Provisional licence and take a medical for both C and C1. You may as well do the C, HGVs tend to offer better value - but over 7.5T if am pretty sure you need the tacho running whether it's private use or not. But I'm not 100 sure of that. PS Ask a local HGV driving school, www.nolgvbrokers.co.uk has a selection.
