Lorry not starting in the cold - what could be the problem??

I had similar problems with alarge 4x4 years ago, I sprayed round the connections on the starter motor and on the battery and very importantly the engine earthing strap on the chasis with some WD40 and made sure everything was tightly connected, kept the vehicle on a optimate as well and it cured it.

Yes 15w40 should be adequate, but remember if the oil hasnt been changed for a while ,it wont be 15w40 anymore.

[/ QUOTE ]

Good advice. Also, even though a 15W-40 is "fine" for these conditions, a 10W-40 is inherently better (and a 5W-30 even better than that, but probably overkill for this truck).

[/ QUOTE ]

Extremely overkill for this "truck" .

15W40 is more than sufficent .

Unless the oil hasn't been changed in the last 2-3 years or the engine is in real bad condition, The 15W40 will not have
thickened enough to stop it from starting . To justify changing the oil to a lower grade oil, the temperature would need to be at a constant -5 - -15 degrees .

Anyhooos .... The problem with the lorry is more or less the amps of the battery , I take it the preheater is working fine ? .

Easy start is not going to blow up or damage your engine if you follow the instructions. It has been given a bad name by people who use it on old engines with problems .They then claim that thge engine becomes "addicted"to the stuff.PMSL. . The engine is never going to improve, unless it is repaired. In very cold conditions a wiff of easystart can make all the difference, starting.

[/ QUOTE ] problem is mike they dont give it a wiff they spray a load in then it knocks which can break rings or piston ring groves if the truck is properly maintaned you will never need the stuff...

[/ QUOTE ]I agree, just a wiff , I have seen starter motors shattered by using too much

I agree about proper maintenance ,but unfortunately certain vehicles are just bad starters in the cold ,even in perfect condition.

Thanks colleen, mike007 and everyone else who has replied. Have just sat OH down and made him read it too.

Lorry is serviced once a year incl oil change so the oil shouldn't be too knackered. Its due in again soon though, and will get OH to mention to them when its in re grade of oil.

We have an isolator already fitted.

Thank you for all the good advice on batteries. I will get OH to check the amps on the battery and have told him that 13.7v is what it should read fully charged (which he didn't know).

If we need a new battery then thats easy enough to organise.

Anyone want to suggest what it a good make of battery to buy. OH can't remember the name of the last battery, but he did buy it from the main Iveco dealer after telling them the model of the lorry.

Cheers C - he says it might be an ac delco one, but will get one of those 3 makes then if we need a new one.

It started perfectly in all the snow last Feb so its not normally a 'bad starter'

Poor little lorry - it hasn't been out for a fortnight now which is unheard of (but hunting all cancelled, and couldn't find anything else on which would have been safe to get to).

I hope it thaws soon.
