Lorry question help please!

Lorry people - can you help me? I have another lorry question. We are looking at buying an older, but very nice, MAN lorry. I have just established it has only 4 wheels - I would have expected all 7.5T lorries to have 4 wheels at the back and two at the front. Is it a massive no no to buy a lorry that only has 4? Is it likely to cause a problem / concern?

Any advice appreciated asap before we make a mistake!

I would query if it is a 7.5 tonne or a 3.5 tonne? 7.5 tonne lorries usually have 4 wheels on the rear to carry the weight, 3.5 tonne lorries only need single wheels on the rear. PM me a link if you prefer, the OH is a mechanic! :)

Yes as above the twin rear wheels each side will be required on a 7.5 ton for the load it carrys, maybe it's had two removed for strange some reason but it woudent be safe or legal ask the seller what the story is !!!!
 
anything OVER 3.5 ton needs to be plated. As this box is plated, it will be bigger than that.

enter the reg plate in DVLA web site re taxing page (as though you want to tax it). It will give you some more info for free. (don't retax it though);)
 
My 7.5ton has only 4 wheels. It's a fairly short box length wise, really could only feasibly carry 2 x 15hh or under. But it has a payload up to 7.5ton none the less :)

Hi thanks for replying. Out of interest what lorry have you got? The lady selling this box says it takes 2 x 16.2hh but I am terribly dumb when it comes to weights etc. She has sent me the following text "Hi ive worked the weight out if right about 1400kg just short of 1.5T so would carry 2 16.2 easy".

Any further advice greatly appreciated.......
 
There are a few lorries out there with just 4 wheels/

I personally would not buy one myself but each to their own having just 4 wheels puts a lot of weight on all 2 axles.

One thing I would be extremely worried about is the weight left to carry.

With all the mod cons it has pictured, tack lockers, toilet, etc I would ask to take it over a weigh bridge - this will cost you less than 5gbp!

Remember full tank of diesel as well 1 litre=1kg

It is a very old AWD lorry. I can't actually remember it's exact payload/weight at the moment. I think it had over 1.5T though. The 15hh restriction I mentioned is because of the size of the horse area and not the actual payload.

1400 is not a lot. My 14.2hh connie weighs about 500kg - I used to give 1T to carry my and my sister's pony. I think for 2 16.2hh horses you'd be looking at about 600kg each, which leaves only 200kg for you and your companion, tack, equipment, water and fuel.

It will have six wheels total two at front 4 at the back, if it hasent two wheels have been removed and it wont be safe or legal ASK the vendor or go and look at it again! the other thing is as others said the only way of finding out what it can legaly carry is go to a local weighbridge find one near the seller and go during a test drive ....
 
Looking at it I think it should have a double axle at the back, the MANs I've seen like that all have a double axle. Think what would happen if you had a rear blow out?
 
you can get super singles but you tend not to put them on drive axle. I would be more inclined to think that someone has down rated it at some point, or just sold two rims and tyres separately. Without seeing the plate its just a guessing game.
