YIPEE!! My lorry passed it's plaiting today, however my speedo has stopped working

This is prob a really blonde question, but I guess by law it has to work), although I mainly drive on country roads 40-45 mph (in 60 limits) so I am never over the limit. Rambo I thought you said the other day that yours doesn't work either

*joins "My speedo doesn't work" clique*

Mine reads ok up to about 20, when it says 30 we're doing about 40, when it says 40 we're doing about 55, I've only ever seen it read as far as 55 a couple of times so goodness knows what speed we're doing then.

only if you use a Tacho.

you really should get it fixed, quite a simple and cheap job to do...because one day you will get caught out by a speedtrap...

or you may think you are doing a steady 30..when infact it could be a steady 20!!!...and you have a queue of irate drivers behind you..

No, it's not a legal requirement for it to work assuming you don't need a tacho. Mine has never worked but it would be handy if it did lol! I have to guess at the speed camera's

Mine doesn't work either, I just go real slow past speed cameras. It also means that your mileage doesn't go up. so get it fixed just before you decide to sell it

You do need a speedo working!

If the police stop you its a wonderful massive fine plus points on your licence!

But it doesn't have to be working for the MOT!

However, remember with lorries it gets technical! Tachos have to be working and used with a graph if its over 7.5t if its under you are fine for the moment-however you should have it calibrated every 6 years!

It will not be long before your will have to have graphs in your working tacho for 7.5t-the EU are working on this at the moment!

i'm glad you put this up foraday, TBH....because i get a little weary of people who think because they only use their vehicle for leisure, they become part of the " it doesn't concern me" brigade.

because i get reward for hire, my vehicle is subjected to all manner of checks/rules/regs etc....

instead of "oh never mind it doesn't work", think "i must get that fixed, because i'm doing something wrong"

TBH, some of the sheds that are on the road should be scrapped instead of travelling animals around in....
eventually, the WIT Law will catch up with every horsebox owner,
I, for one, feels it should be sooner rather than later!!!

to get my speedo working as I'm not taco required would cost me around £2000 for a new speedo with tacho plus fitting at a main ford dealer as my mobile mechanic cannot do the work - has to be done by a main dealer.

As that is more than my 27 yr old lorry is worth and i do about 200 miles a year in it it's not viable to have the work done.

as for swipes by JM at 'old boxes' not ALL old lorries are heaps of jumk. Personally my horses are my family and there is NO WAY I'd put my horse into a dangerous lorry. Mine is checked every time it is used - the mats are lifted and I check from top and from underneath with a screwdriver. It also passes the plate first time EVERY year without a problem.

where in my post did i mention "OLD" boxes???

get your glasses out, love..........

i know of a lorry, its on a T plate, 1999..and its a shed!!!!!!

i still stand by what i said...everyone should have EVERYTHING working correctly on their vehicle....and the sooner the law with WIT is enforced more strongly the better.

Only thing my tacho requires to make speedo work is a the paper trace. Trace in - speedo works, trace out - speedo doesn't. They do wear after a while so do need replacing occsaionally

mine has good days and bad days atm its working but if mister lorry is feeling a little under the weather then it will say we r doin 5mph wen we r going down a motorway

I recalibrated my own Speedo as it was way out the wrong way (was letting me speed). Its marked up with stickers and Tippex now!

It is illegal have an inacurate or non-working speedometer and tachograph (if fitted).

Speedometers are not checked for the MOT as on commercial vehicles the tachograph and speedometer have to be regularly callibrated and the certificate is presented at the testing station when the vehicle has it's MOT

7.5 ton vehicles now have to have their tachograph callibrated every 6 years whether it is used or not.

The vehicle inspectorate warned horse box owners that they would have mobile inspection units last year and would be checking vehicles and horse passports in combination with fair standard trading officers. They have already stopped a number of horse boxes in this area either when entering show grounds or at exits of motorways and dual carridgeways.

If you know your speedometer/tachograph is not working get it checked and repaired as the fine is about £6,000.00 I am afraid.

sometime taking tacho paper out and putting it back in again can get the speedo working again. or it might just need tinkering with by mechanic. tell them asap and they'll do it for free, it shouldn't come back from plating not working...
oh, and i think it's against the law to drive with speedo not working. it definitely is if the mileometer isn't working either...

But is it illegal to recalibrate it yourself?

So where are you supposed to get it done? It sounds expensive, in that I have to take a day off work and get the lorry there and back.

£40!!!! The dirty robbing b@stards!

It took me 10 mins with a felt tip pen and my Satnav to mark it up, and I bet my marks are more accurate than what they manage to do!
