Just made it back from a show...

Lorry started ok, but seemed to keep almost stalling on tickover and a couple of times at slow junctions it conked out. Could it be the diesel is running out and gauge just not working or lack of power for any other reason. Just wanted opinions, not taking it out before the lorry man gets back from holiday!!

Engine was not too hot on the temp gauge.
Thanks!

Ok will test diesel thanks, it saying a quarter of a tank but you never know, yes there was one big puff off smoke once before it conked out, not like it really we have had no probs for 3 years, but not really right the last couple of times we have used it!!

If its an old lorrry, mine does this unless you rev the engine a bit as you are slowing down. I have my engine serviced every year. Mechanic says its because of the age ( 21 years old ) you have to give it a little rev especially changing down gears and slowing down. Takes a bit of getting used to doing, but I've not had a problem for years now. I presume its to do with diesel flow

Mine has been doing this, we have changed fuel filters and the diff pump filter was cleaned too, it is much improved but still doing it so much in the same boat!

When was the last time you changed the fuel filters and the air cleaner filter?
tbh not sure when this was done, will give it to lorry man when he gets back and hopefully get it sorted, I think it has been slower to start the last few times so must have been on the blink for a while. Just haven't really noticed until this happened. Not going out in it until then, too scared!

Keep any diesel well topped up with fuel, gauges are often faulty anyway, but running out of diesel is a biggy!
Agree about filters, in an older engine a lot of sediment can build up [one reason for keeping topped up] Also keep an eye on the temperature gauge, do not run it on the red, it can lead to an engine re-build.
You may consider having the tank drained, the fuel can be filtered and re used.
Also make sure oil is clean and never frothy white [water leaking in to oil]
Don't want to alarm you, but you must keep it maintained.

Mine was doing this, & it turned out to be (I think...) some sort of pump thing failing. Diesel pump/lift pump or something like that. It went away to be refurbished & was refitted.

Thanks for all the help, I do keep it maintained, I am not alarmed at the thought of that, its serviced every year and always passes plating, it had just appeared to come on recently and not being a mechanic and as mine is away I wanted a bit of an insight into what it could be. I would obviously never use it in this state, until it is completely fixed, I would hate to break down with my precious horses on board. I have full roadside recovery but I would rather it didn't come to that. I totally understand that to have a lorry means it has to be looked after, but these things happen and this forum can mainly be very helpful in the meantime.
