Hi, I'm after some advice please. Have just got my new lorry but obviously there is no tax on it. It is a new conversion so the Reg doc for the cab shows the tax class to be HGV, I think that when I receive the new reg doc in my name it will show that it is a private HGV. I want to try to tax it with the supplemental bit of the V5, do you think I will be able to get it taxed as a private HGV, or am I going to have to wait until the new reg doc comes through?? Also can I tax it at a large Post Office, or will I need to go to a DVLA office????
Sorry, as you can see not had to do this before !!

I can tell you if it comes back as HGV it will be a nightmare, it has taken weeks & I am still struggling but this is the response I got for a box that was Non HGV (7490) coming back showing HGV on log book;
It is not possible to licence the vehicle at the Post Office in the HGV tax class without a V11 Vehicle Licence Application Form. Generally horse boxes are taxed in the Private Heavy Goods Vehicle (PHGV) taxation class. After checking the vehicle record it would seem the current taxation class of the vehicle is shown as Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) and not PHGV

As you do not have a V11 you will need to licence the vehicle at a DVLA local office. The DVLA local offices can be found on our website below. If you need to change the tax class of the vehicle the DVLA local office will do this at the time you make an application to licence the vehicle.

If the box come back as PHGV then a main post office is fine.

when I had my lorry built 3 years ago I had to go to the main DVLA office which for me was Brighton to have the V5 converted from HGV to non. Seem to recall had to take the old log book and the plate/MOT. Bit of a hassle but took my mum and we had a nice day shopping and seeing the sea!!..after that you can tax at ordinary Post office..

Damn, thats what I thought you would all say!! Thanks for helping. I kinda knew I was probably in for a trip to the DVLA office. although, I think that the guy who we bought the cab from is going to change the use on the log book, so I think when I get the reg doc it will show PHGV - seems so silly for a standard 7.5ton vehicle. Looks like I am going to have to wait for the log book before I can do anything

If your lorry tax has run out and you don't want to continue it from when it finished unlike a car you can't re tax it at a Post office. You can either go to your Local DVLA office (there aren't too many of them around) or you can post it to them. I have done that in the past and it only took about 3 days from when I posted it to get back to me.

If you have downgraded a lorry you might need to get VOSA to re weigh it/check it over???? I would phone VOSA up to find out if you need to do anything.
