I have been told that all drivers of vehicles of 7.5 tons will be required to take a competency test by 2014. I haven't heard this formally, is anyone aware of it?

MYTH ALERT!!

Seriously, If something like this was being proposed then I would have heard about it as I am in touch with many LGV training schools who in turn are in touch with the DSA

If there was a LGV C1 competency test then it would be the DfT/DSA who were spearheading it and would probably require LGV trainers to assess the drivers prior to test

Just a thought as to what this could be ....
The new rules from Jan 2013 require a self certifying medical from all LGV drivers under the age of 45 every 5 years

I think you are referring to this, the driver CPC which is applicable if you drive professionally.

A driver with an HGV licence has 5 years between Sep 2009 and 10th Sep 2014 to complete the 35 hours training required.
Nail + head

But only for those who want to drive commercially after 09/09/2014

There are still many companies and drivers who only have 7.5s/C1s that have no clue about this

gah more expense for everyone although I know and appreciate why it should be done. That said though why not just extend it to all drivers eg car and motorcyclists as well then?!

Luckily for me I work in a hospital so got mine done in exchange for a snickers (lol!) but its another unfortunate expense for others though.

The whole rule change on only being able to drive on L plates with a 'test passed' person is annoying too - if only I had gone through this whole process a couple of years earlier! Although again I understand why it was done but its still unfair that anyone over a certain age can just jump in and drive away - they should make everyone have to do it. Still....not long now and I shall be freeeee! (I hope anyway!) ;)

Bit abbrupt dont you think?!

I missed the bit that said self certifying and thought it was the driver medical they were going to get you to do again.

In any case then a self certifying form seems a complete waste of time to me.

My comment was aimed at the silly authorities not you :D
