I have a short journey to work, so I can afford to run a 4x4. if I had a long journey, I would buy an older lorry and a small run around car.
I also (personally) don't like towing my horse for more than an hour journey and I try to avoid motorways. If I did longer journeys I would get a lorry.
I tow twice a week, every week, anything more than that also probably justifies a lorry. (in my mind anyway)
If I had the money I'd go for a lorry everytime but can't afford it so will carry on with trailer, I know it costs to tow but you don't have to pay MOT & Tax etc and there's more to wrong with a lorry, still wish I had one though !!
My personal opinion is that lorries are better than trailers, but this is due to being in an accident with one and my horse being put to sleep at the scene. (Not my trailer and I wasn't driving, it was a freak accident and not the fault of my friend who was behind the wheel)
Problem with lorries is that they need taxing and plating/MOT, but you have the benefit of the living etc. However you may need to buy another vehicle to tow depending on what car you have now.
Lorries for me, only because mine won't, for all the tea in china, go in a trailer
I share a runaround car with my kids!
I use it at least twice a week, and use it for camps; And when its cold and raining, its nice to be able to sit inside and have a cuppa
LOrry, as drive alot in samll car for commuting etc.
Ys,lorry costs about £1,000 a year to keep serived, taxed, insured and MOT'd, but saving £20 of fuel a week by driving economical small old chepapie car makes up for it
Also can make uze of the living for days at comeptions and several stayovers a year.
Currently have a trailer, because it's not as expensive as a lorry. (OH has a Landrover and works very nearby, so the fuel costs aren't too bad, whilst I run a cheapie car for my 10 mile each way journey to work). Am not in a position currently to swap the trailer for a lorry, however, after travelling back along the M40 last Sunday in a fairly gusty wind - I was wishing that I had a lorry there and then, for sheer stability.
We bought a tow stabiliser at the weekend and used it with the trailer for the first time on Sunday and it did make a BIG improvement, (I thoroughly recommend one to everyone towing a trailer of any kind - it cuts out virtually all of the snaking) however in a fairly strong wind it was still quite scary travelling with a trailer and had we not bought the stabiliser we wouldn't have actually gone to the event at all, except in a lorry.

I agree... but a trailer does restrict me on the distance I'm prepared to travel. Think it's much safer in a lorry.
lorry i would say.
better base espiecailly if you are going to have a long day!
generally safer aswell.
and, of course, there is the thing about having to have a tow car if you had a trailer which are expensive to run so.....(gas guzzlers, ha!)
I had a lorry until a few months ago, but it was costing a fortune every year in repairs etc to get through the DOE test and went through insane amounts of diesel. I already had a Landrover so I bought a trailer and I wish I'd done it earlier - it's so much less hassle. To be honest I don't mind towing long distances (I tend to forget about the trailer!) and even though we live up a windy mountain I've never had any problems - having said that things might change now it's coming into winter
I guess the living in a lorry is handy - but if you only have a trailer it's an excuse to stay in nice hotels instead!
Matter of personal preference I guess (and if I could afford one of those big fancy Oakley type lorries I'd definitely have one!)
I've had my trailer 10 years, it's cost me £300 for a new floor and a total of about £200 on services and a long breast bar etc in that time.
But running the 4x4 is expensive.
Still say my trailer is my best horsey bargin ever.
Since I don't have parking space a lorry would not really be an option for me although I would love a little 5 tonne with living.
Think an Equitreck might be a happy medium but they cost so much.
I'm try to decide what to do as want my own transport next year as been going out atleast twice a month all year round on other peoples.
I can borrow a landrover - so buy a trailer... But then i either need to learn to tow and take my test, or get someone to tow me places (which is a pain). I'd also need to get insured on said Landrover (excluded from my company insurance as its not mine or companies)
or a lorry, which i could drive, and have got access to many friendly mechanics at work who could keep it tip top. But obviously costs a lot to mot, tax, plate etc.
cant decide what to do really, worked out i probably spend around roughly 1000-1500 min a year on rented tranport. the luxury of a lorry would be good but not sure if it would be cost effective.
so i will watch this thread with interest too see what peoples views are.
I got my Lorry as my disco was getting to 'that age', also I do lots of miles for work and only get a very basic fuel allowance.
Selling the disco and the trailer paid for a c reg 5.4 tonne dodge, we spent a fair bit on the brakes the first year but she hads been very good and passed her MOT for the past two years, plus OH is mechanicaly minded. I have a fiesta as a run about. Insurance and tax on the lorry and fiesta combined is about the same, perhaps slightly more than the trailer and disco, however fuel works out much cheaper, plus its so nice to have the living area. We have used it for sleepovers too!
Another good point is that if you or your family move house you dont need to hire a van, it can take loads of hay and is useful if motor bikes break down!
Lorry... its nice to have room for tack, a loo shower hob and fridge I run a fiesta diesel 60 mpg and £35 tax as a daily driver oh yes if you dont go far a trailer is fine and 4x4 s are a real bargain at the moment .... oh might consider one of these insted www.coolhorse.com/ct33199.html
Lorry. But as mine has just failed its MOT big style.... Also run a Discovery - I do a lot of miles for work as a consultant, but next contract might always go by train (hubby has runaround which would be good for getting to the station. Some think it's excessive to have both, but the Disco has seven seats which means that most of the time friends can come with us so we only take one car, cutting down on their fuel if not mine lol. The lorry tends to be base camp at shows, she's old and she's not the smartest, but she's friendly and warm and hubby can go and watch telly or read the paper in comfort when he's had enough! So saying, he would prefer I swap the Disco for a Range Rover and tow a trailer as it would be more comfortable to travel in (don't see his problem, can hear the radio and the heater works, what more does he want?). Good luck deciding. Why don't you go and see a few within your price band and see what you think? I know of trailers that cost double what my lorry did, so even taking this MOT, the Tax and the insurance into account it's cheaper. Oh, and the lorry is actually the most economical vehicle we have when all is considered i
